I already had ES File Explorer, but not ES File Manager, but when I google, they seem to be the same thing, from ES App Group. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&hl=en They called it the "ES File Explorer Manager", so I presume it's the same. 1. I started ES File Explorer and a bunch of blue folders show up 2. I hit the hardwired three lines on the phone body 3. I get a menu titled "Fast Access" with "Network" listed 4. I press "Network" and 4 options show, one of which is FTP 5. I press "FTP"; nothing happens but it says Add a server by New>Server 6. I hit the "+" sign for "New" and then "ftp" out of the list 7. A "New FTP Server" form shows up with the options: Server = Port = 21 Mode = passive Username = Password = anonymous = encoding = display as = I hit the cancel button because I think that is setting up the *phone* as the FTP server. But don't I want the laptop to be the ftp server to *put* the files to? BTW, I'm familiar with FTP, which I haven't used in a decade or so, but we used to use it all the time as follows: ftp fardomain.com 21 (we normally entered a password for user@mydomain) cd /path/on/ftp/server binary get filename put filename quit > I don't know a lot about Linux, but there must surely be FTP client > software available. When you use that, you'll be able to see the file > structure on the phone and select individual files or whole folders, > which can then be transferred with a single click. I'm sure that I can make Linux either a client or a server, but, what does FTP have to do with WiFi? Can't I just copy over WiFi like I do with a cable? > My solution assumes that you have a WiFi hotspot to which both laptop > and phone are connected, so that they are on the same network. Yes. They are on the same network, via a home broadband router. > all is not lost even if you're in the middle of nowhere with no WiFi > access because you may be able to configure the laptop to be a WiFi > hotspot and then connect the phone to that - or the other way round even. I never thought of making the laptop a WiFi hotspot, and don't yet know how to do that, nor if it's needed (since bluetooth works without it).

But don't I want the laptop to be the ftp server to > *put* the files to? Moving forward, I start ES File Explorer Manager (I don't know how to tell you what version it is). 1. I go to the LAN screen. 2. I press the "New" (plus) button. 3. A "Server" form comes up asking: Domain = (blank) Server = (blank) Username = (blank) Password = (blank) [ ]Anonymous Display as = (blank) I'm not sure what to put in some of those fields: a. I left the domain name empty (wouldn't know what to put there anyway) b. For the "Server", I ran ifconfig on the Linux laptop, which came up with 192.168.1.5 as the laptop IP address, so I put: Server = 192.168.1.5/tmp c. I'm not sure if I'm setting up the *phone* or the *laptop* as the server, so, the next question was "Username" & "Password" but for what? Is that for the phone? It also allowed "Anonymous" but again, is that for the phone or the laptop? So I put my "real" linux login & password on the Android app (I hope that was what it wanted, but I couldn't tell). It said "Adding server" (please wait a minute", and then it said "Error could not find server". Of course, my laptop is not set up, by default, to be an FTP server, so, did I miss a step?

You missed that last step. ES File Explorer doesn't see a running FTP server at the address you specified, which is the Linux laptop, thus the error message. You need to get the server on the laptop running first. How about Dropbox or other similar cloud service for transferring the files? There's are Dropbox clients for Android (ES File Explorer, for one,) and I suppose there's a Linux one, too.

Thanks for the advice, Nil, as I don't want to set up another server on the Linux laptop if I don't have to (because, as I said, each server opens up another security can of worms). > How about Dropbox or other similar cloud service for transferring the > files? There's are Dropbox clients for Android (ES File Explorer, for > one,) and I suppose there's a Linux one, too. I know there are locally administered LAN-only dropbox style server/ client combos, but I'm not an administrative wiz kid (which you can probably figure out without me saying that), so I don't want to set up a local dropbox zone just to xfer pictures that I can already transfer by bluetooth with the exception that I do it by individual files. Likewise, the overhead and security issues with using the Internet to simply xfer pictures from a phone that is inches away from a laptop is a Rube Goldberg solution. Sure, it would work. But, it's like that Mousetrap game we played as kids. Too much motion in the wrong direction just to get a file to move a few inches in the right direction. I think, at the moment, the most promising solutions are: a) Figure out how to get bluetooth to move folders, (best) b) Figure out how to easily transfer by wifi (second best) c) Use a Rube Goldberg solution (worst).

Pretty much I figured out the extremely inflexible GUI for the previously suggested "Turbo Client" which uses SFTP to my existing Linux server (I guess I had an SFTP server all along, unbeknownst to me). I wrote up a tutorial so that the *next* person doesn't have to shoot around, and, as Marek stated, it's easy (but as Marek doesn't know because he never tried the app), the app is *extremely* sensitive to the wrong button press (it just wipes out everything, with nary a warning). Once I got Turbo Client SFTP working, that solved my problem, thanks to the help here. Turbo Client apparently uses my WiFi router as the go-between, which is fine by me. I don't know yet whether it will accept hostnames, so, at the moment I'm using the hard-coded DHCP address of the laptop, which will change over time.

Here is the step-by-step tutorial if anyone wishes to follow suit. 20150713 SFTP to the Linux SSH server pictures & files. Install Turbo FTP client & SFTP client - Vlad Mihalachi - June 19, 2015 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=turbo.client&hl=en 0. WARNING: The GUI is *extremely* unintuitive and unpolished! Experts only! 1. Start Turbo FTP client & SFTP client - Vlad Mihalachi - June 19, 2015 2. Press "Create a new account", and choose SFTP (out of FTP or SFTP) NOTE: Be very careful as this is decidedly NOT a mature implementation. There are absolutely no warnings when you forget to fill out necessary fields. It just wipes out everything you did, without any warning whatsoever. 3. In the "General" section, (very carefully) fill out the form: WARNING: Accidentally hit the "back" arrow one extra time and it *wipes* out every single thing you've entered, without fail, and without warning! Connection Name = foobar Username = foo Password = bar Host = 192.168.1.6 (or the linux hostname) Port = 22 Default Remote Folder = /tmp NOTE: Do not press ANYTHING other than what you type above. Then either press the "Floppy" icon at top, or go to the next step. 4. In the "Advanced" section, change only what's necessary: Encoding = blank Default Local Folder = /storage/sdcard0/ NOTE: There are multiple very confusing locations, all of which look the same, some of which *are* the same, others of which are not, and, to make matters worse, the GUI flips case constantly so you can *never* be certain of case (the exact same locations are shown at top in all uppercase and in the bottom with mixed case!). WARNING: Once you get past 3 levels, the GUI disappears at top showing you your current working directory so you instantly LOSE sight of where you are at the 4th level and further (so you may need to write it down). Worse, yet, if you hit the back arrow, you start at the beginning! Hit the back arrow one too many times, and you lose everything! /STORAGE/EMULATED/0/DCIM/Camera /STORAGE/EMULATED/legacy/DCIM/Camera /STORAGE/sdcard0/DCIM/Camera /STORAGE/extSdCard/DCIM/Camera <== I think this is the right one /MNT/extSdCard/DCIM/Camera <==I think this is the right one also /MNT_1/extSdCard/ (and so on) /MNT/sdcard/DCIM/Camera /MNT_1.sdcard_1/ (and so on) /MNT_1.sdcard_2/ (and so on) /MNT_1.sdcard_3/ (and so on) Private Key = blank Use a passphrashe = (slider to the left) NOTE: The slider has absolutely no markings; but apparently left is off. Passphrase = blank 5. There is no way you're going to set this up without wiping it out a few times due to the many gotchas in the extremely unpolished GUI, but once you have it set up, the key is to navigate to this set of desktop panes: Remote = /tmp Local = /STORAGE/EXTSDCARD/DCIM/CAMERA (hit the "select all" button) Hit the "upload" (up arrow) button. This will copy all your selected photos from the Android device to the remote Linux device in the specified directory, over WiFi. 6. There is no "quit" button, nor a confirmation message when done (although individual files do show a status bar), so, just hit the problematic back arrow to quit out of the program. This is an expert-only program, with a streamlined GUI that adds absolutely no bells nor whistles. It just does the job, and, after you get the sequence of steps down perfectly, it will be fast and efficient. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I asked a question of how to get Bluetooth to select all files. I solved that one also, just now, without the help of this group since *nobody* suggested a single bluetooth solution. I also solved the GUI problem with the suggested extremely unforgiving "Turbo Client", and, it turns out to be much faster (buttmeter measurement) than the bluetooth was. However, in the interests of helping others and giving back to the ng, here's the bluetooth tutorial for selecting hundreds of files in one fell swoop. 0. On Linux, KDE: System Settings > Network and Connectivity > Bluetooth Devices: Devices = enable KDE bluetooth integration File Transfers: enable receive files, File Transfers: save files in /tmp/bluetooth, File Transfers: accept automatically trusted device Adapters: name = ubuntu-0, powered = checked, always visible 1. On Android, press "Gallery" and locate the photo directory you wish to transfer en masse to Linux. 2. Now comes the tricky part! So pay attention and don't touch *anything that I don't tell you to touch! Make sure you are in "Albums" view! (any other view will fail!) 3. In Albums view, long press on the desired album (e.g., vacation_pics), and notice that a green checkmark shows up on the "album". 4. Also notice the bluetooth icon that shows at top, so hit that bluetooth icon, and it will scan for nearby devices. One of those nearby devices will be "ubuntu-0", so select that. That's it! This will send *all* the pictures in that directory to the Linux laptop / tmp directory over your bluetooth connection between the two devices! NOTE: On Linux you will see individual "receiving file over bluetooth" dialog boxes, one for each photo.

That's a nice feature - I didn't realize ES File Explorer had an FTP server. Unfortunately, it's not working for me. I can't make a connection from the PC to the phone. I'll tinker with it some more later. This could be a handy thing someday.

In hindsight, I realize that yesterday it, for some unknown reason, it chose to suggest a bogus IP address to use for the FTP client. I don't know where that came from, but tonight it suggested the correct one. I used it and made the connection and transferred some files easily. This is a good tool to have in the kit. In the OP's case, I think this would have been the easiest solution.

No, it's asking you for the information needed to connect to the the server (which you will have set up yourself on your Linux machine.) Here's an example of the settings for one of my FTP connections: Server = The host name or IP address of the server you're connecting to Port = standard port is 21, but the server could be set up otherwise Mode = depends on the server setup. Passive is more common, I think Username = self-explanatory Password = self-explanatory anonymous = in case the server is set up for anonymous access encoding = should be AUTO unless you have a good reason to change it display as = an alias for your benefit
