When I try a lookup on Tello's phone validation with the IMEI of my Note 4,
it says "No-Go".

But elsewhere in the Tello pages, it suggests that just about any phone
except for a few outliers like Blackberry will work.

Seems like something around CDMA vs GSM, but I have no clue whether that is a
phone-specific property, a SIM-specific property, and/or some phones can do
both.

Couple hundred bucks and Tello will supply me with a decent-sounding refurb,
but I would much prefer to stick with my Note 4 and it's stylus.

Can anybody shed some light?

tello is a sprint mvno and phones must either be a sprint model or
unlocked and whitelisted with sprint.

either choose a new phone or choose a new carrier (one which isn't a
sprint mvno).

Tello is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator): they resell services
from other providers.

Tello uses Sprint's 4G LTE network (GSM).  Yet I see Tello offers CDMA
service by paying $10 for their Sprint CDMA SIM card
(https://tello.com/bring_your_own_phone).  AT&T already dropped CDMA,
Verizon shuts if off in 2019.  Haven't check when Sprint kills CDMA.

Is your Note 4 and unlocked phone that can be used with any carrier, or
is it a locked phone which means you can only use it with one carrier?
If you buy one of their phones, they work with their service.  If you
have an unlocked phone, you can use their Bring-Your-Own-Phone setup
(but you might have to buy the SIM card from them).  If you have a phone
that is locked to a particular carrier, that's the only one with whom
you can use that phone.

they offer both, as does sprint, the service they're reselling.

verizon, the other legacy cdma carrier, also offers both cdma and lte.

Unlocked from Day 1 - I bought it that way from B&H Photo.

The more I read about Tello, the more I think their service is CDMA (whatever
that means...) and I am now about 99 44/100ths percent sure that my Note 4
cannot do CDMA.

Note 8, yes.... can go both ways... but not the Note 4.

which note 4? exact model#.

for it to work on tello, it needs to be either a sprint phone (lock
status does not matter) or an non-sprint phone that has been both
unlocked *and* whitelisted by sprint. the latter is most likely your
situation.

yep, no cdma and its lte bands don't support what sprint uses.

it does support lte bands used by the other three, particularly at&t.

CDMA and 2G (GSM) networks are getting or have been decommissioned.
Wonder how long Tello can survive.  The reason Tello mentions
Sprint-locked phones as typically acceptable is because Sprint is one of
the last holdouts using CDMA.

since they support lte, they can survive as long as lte does.
