"in" usually refers to MID header's value. So that threw me since I was
trying to figure how my MID's value could be conscrewed, er, construed
to this all-numerical value. "on" would be more appropriate for a
timestamp, like "On <day> at <time>, <person> wrote:".

Personally I detest noisying up the attribution line with values that
can be obtained by simply looking at the headers of the parent post,
especially when that information is positioned before the poster's name.
It is more important to see to whom the cited content is attributed than
other header duplication. The purpose of the attribution lines is to
see who said what to whom, not a placeholder for a multitude of other
headers. The exception is perhaps including the MID value should the
parent article be missing from the reader's NNTP server. It's been a
very long time since peering across the worldwide mesh network of NNTP
servers has been super slow or resulted in missing articles so the
inclusion of the MID header in the attribution line has little value
anymore. The References header in a reply post shows the MID for the
parent post, anyway. So, again, putting it in the attribution line is
duplication of header already available within the same post.

To follow the attribute lines as to who said what to whom, it is easier
to track the participants by seeing:

In the later scheme, the "who" gets lost in the noise of duplicating
other headers in the attribution line. Even worse is that these noisy
and oversized attribution lines often wrap around to continue in more
lines. Instead of a single line for the attribution, they are multiple
lines long.

While NNTP clients usually show the poster's name in the message list,
that's not where you read the body of a post. You're focused in the
body and that's where noisy attributions make it difficult to track the
participants. Even for those adamant in duplicating a bunch of headers
in their attribution lines, the who (From) should be first, not last.
