Their newsreaders don't understand MIME at all; unless ISO-8859-1
happens to be their default/only encoding, they'll get mojibake.

Though, yeah, people using ISO-8859-1 or Windows-1252, i.e. US/CA/UK
users, tend to be the only ones using such obsolete software.

That's typical for the US ;-)

"There is currently a movement within the medical field to discontinue
the use of cc in prescriptions and on medical documents, as it can be
misread as "00". This could cause a hundredfold overdose of medication,
which could be dangerous or even lethal. In the United States, such
confusion accounts for 12.6% of all errors associated with medical
abbreviations"

Such problems did never exists over here. We use correct units.

I can't recall the last time I saw "cc" in writing. However, "mL" seems
to be pronounced "see see" by medical practitioners; it's simply easier
to say than "mililiter".

Similarly, "km" is pronounced "klick" by military types.

Maybe not a good idea in the US, where mil is the unit for 1/1000 of
an inch. (Writing a milli-inch as min is probably not a good idea.)
It isn't so hard to say em-ell.

The difference is usually obvious from the context given that
ml is a measure of volume and the other one is a very small
measure of distance. Yes, they are pronounced the same way.

(Writing a milli-inch as min is probably not a good idea.)

In NATO, a mil is an angle. Initially a milliradian. Later 6400 to a circle.

Very handy for arty because 1 metre at 1000 metres is (near enough) 1 mil.

And then the rationalisation to SI, when all the products of PI changed from

My year at school was the first one where the public exams expected SI.
About my only memory of the transition is that we got shiny new textbooks.

Perhaps you're a year younger than I, for my 'A' levels in 1969 were the
last
year in CGS and Imperial units, as was the Applied Maths.

I remember a NASA expedition quoting deceleration as "One foor per second
per second" long after I would have expected them to have moved to metric
measurements. That did surprise me at the time, but nowadays I appreciate
the notion of tested and tried when it comes to computer systems.

My 'O' levels were in 1970 and they were also in SI units. I have a vague
and possibly unreliable memory that not all examining boards switched at the
same time (ours was Oxford Local- full name that I've just found with a
search is "Oxford University Delegacy of Local Examinations").
