If I were selling a 50 cent cable to fools for $10,000US, I'd invest a
few dollars into making it look fancy as well.  $9,995.50US profit is
still a huge margin on a cable that ultimately cost 50 cents.

Dagnabbit they only do UK 13A and Euro (Schuko), whatever the latter is.

I suppose I'd need a Swiss mains to Euro (Schuko) adaptor as well. :-)

To be fair, the description for this "product" does not mention MP3s at
all. Although anyone clueless enough to buy this sort of thing might
well be listening to crappy MP3s with it.

 Never mind a meaningless MTBF figure, what about the MTTF? OTOH, if your 
first question concerns reliability, you've obviously got money to burn 
(and in huge quantities).

 What gets me is how Russ has managed to avoid being shut down by an 
irate customer considering that his target customers, for the most part, 
will have the the where-with-all (and then some!) to afford to pay their 
lawyer’s emergency plumbing repair bills without so much as batting an 
eyelid.

 His very existence speaks volumes about the surreal world of the 
stinking rich society. I'm surprised Russ hasn't started marketing cables 
made up from silver recycled from 50 pound notes in order to tap into 
that double whammy of eco-green stinking rich, 'money is no object' 
audiophool class of customer.

 If anyone could get away with such a marketing trick, Russ Andrews would 
be the man. It occurs to me that Russ must be an extreme thrill seeker of 
the kind that regards sky-diving and free-climbing as pastimes fit only 
for the amusement of 'Wusses'. He must surely have booked his place in 
the Sales and Marketing Hall of Fame by now.

I can't really see why the target customers would involve their lawyers. 
I expect the cables work, in the sense that they perform in the same way 
that $5 cables do. The audiophile who buys this stuff is hardly going to 
be the kind of person who starts performing standardised tests. They'll 
just convince themselves that what they hear is better with the new cable.

That is the most likely reason, although for a $10k cat-6 cable there
may also be a "mine is more expensive than your's" effect going on as
well.

 Oh, there's no "maybe" about *that* effect. Presumably Russ has the very 
good sense to provide a level of after market support to match his 
pricing levels.

 I'm sure the stinking rich audiophile understands full well that lengths 
of 3.5 mil flat twin and earth (or even 6 mil FT&E 'cooker cable') will 
perform at least as good as the Russ Andrews speaker cables, they just 
won't look as 'pretty' is all. In any case, what's the point in having 
money to burn if you can't demonstrate so ostentatiously to your peers 
just how rich (and powerful) a personage you are.

 When it comes to exploiting this one-upmanship effect, it's not just 
Russ Andrews who profits, Apple have been running a "Poor Man's" version 
of this marketing strategy for the last three decades or so. You've only 
got to look at the insane pricing of their latest ten thousand dollar 
Smart Watches to see that they're extending the envelope (and by their 
own admission to boot!).
