The Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has spoken out against wearable
technology, slating most smartwatches as no more than smartphone
accessories that could be relegated to the same category as Bluetooth
   headsets.

Apple is expected to release its first smartwatch on 9 September in
California, alongside a new larger iPhone. Samsung and LG released two
new smartwatches this week, joining a growing number from various
   manufacturers.

?I feel that wearables are a hard sell,? Wozniak told technology site
Cnet. ?They are go-betweens for your smartphone but are an extra piece
and need special advantages that the smartphone doesn't have, in my
   opinion.?

?If they are just a Bluetooth go-between then it could wind up in the
category of Bluetooth headsets: fun to wear and show off for a day,?
said Wozniak, describing the derision that Bluetooth hands free voice
calling headsets suffer and their propensity to be bought and played
with for a day or two before being abandoned or left for trips in the
   car.

I guess you could take the quote two ways. I was first going to suggest
it's surprisingly old-fashioned a point of view for him, suggesting he's
gotten out of touch with technology. But perhaps his point is that
current smartwatches and such aren't actually all that enticing. And
that point I agree with.

Motorola is about to release a smart watch that looks pretty nice -
hoping to see this technology advance.

What's needed is a HW platform for open source license free manufacture.

Straight off the top of my head I can think of quite a few applications
for smart watches, in security, scheduling, fitness, navigation,
communication, financial, translation.... where a capable device on the
wrist would be much more convenient than reaching for the 'phone.

If left to Apple, Samsung and others, then these guys will get carried
away with the 'show off' fashion statement and not focus on the
function. And the newspapers will profit on stories of iWatch posh owner
muggings :(

So stoke up the DIY fire. Make this cheap as $5 digital watches became
in the eighties. Don't let the nasty big corps monopolise.

A watch case & strap is a very good small size of object for 3D
printing, an iPod Nano type display and a very low power RISC board
could be manufactured so cheaply - development board manufacturers in
china are falling over each other with their own Raspberry Pi wanabee.
So be original, do this.

This is it, someone's destiny. Not Wozniak's but our geek project.

Yet I can't be arsed to be a kickstarter.
