Apple just announced its HomeKit development platform for "smart home" apps[3]
earlier this week but the creative minds at Philips have revealed that
they're already hard at work making an app to take advantage of it. Philips
this week sent out a message on Twitter[4] showing off a concept prototype
for a new iOS 8 widget that would give you control over Philips' Hue wireless
lighting system from your iPhone's[5] notification center. As you can see
from the picture posted below, the concept widget would let you select from
several different lighting settings on iOS 8[6], including color schemes such
as Sunset and Deep Sea. We're sure this is going to be just the first of many
new "smart home" apps developed for the iPhone[7] in the coming months and we
can't wait to see what other developers come up with.

The smart home is an awesome idea for extracting even more information
from people. I bet the Stasi would have loved the smart home idea.

I have a dumb home. I must manually activate everything, excepting the
heat which is controlled by a dumb thermostat. I don't know exactly
how this smart crap would help me, it just seems needlessly expensive
and prone to obsolescence.

Maybe I'm missing out on something.

Spending lots of money to look cool perhaps?

When I've been working irregular hours in the winter I've wished I could
remotely switch on my central heating, but not often enough to build a
system to do it. I certainly wouldn't use someone else's spyware to do it.

Yeah, I agree. I like the ability to be able to automate temperature
and illumination remotely, or monitor surveillance cameras pointed at
the front and back doors, or whatever, but that technology largely
exists already and isn't that complicated. OK, so a new "app" system
allows you to do it all from the comfort of your iphone or whatever.
Not a huge advance, if you ask me, unless again Apple finds a way to
make it so extraordinary that peoples' blood pressure soars just
thinking about it.

I dislike the idea of spyware reporting for example when I'm in and out
of the building though, or things like that. The ability of a spystate
to monitor statistics on an individual is skyrocketing - already you
can figure out so much by monitoring computer usage.
