The fortnight is little-used, but its meaning is clear if you look it
up in the dictionary. The problem with the stone is that there are
two versions: 14 lb. and 20 lb, and since it is not used at all in
the US, there's no way for a USanian to find out which definition is
the one used for weighing humans.

In the VMS operating system, there was a system parameter that was specified
in units of ufortnights. (Irt was noted in the docs that this was
approximated by seconds.)

That was what I was referring to back up-thread when I mentioned DEC.

About 1.2 seconds, I believe.

Here you go:

SYSGEN> SHOW TIMEPROMPTWAIT
Parameter Name Current Default Min. Max. Unit Dynamic
-------------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ---- -------
TIMEPROMPTWAIT 65535 65535 0 65535 uFortnight

Here's the help on that parameter:

TIMEPROMPTWAIT defines the number of seconds that you want a
processor to wait for the time and date to be entered when a
system boot occurs, if the processor's time-of-year clock does
not contain a valid time. (The time unit of micro-fortnights
is approximated as seconds in the implementation.) If the
time specified by TIMEPROMPTWAIT elapses, the system continues
the boot operation, and the date and time are set to the last
recorded time that the system booted.

                                      NOTE

Compaq recommends that you set the correct system time
before allowing the system to run, so that all functions
using time-stamping (such as the operator log, the error
log, accounting records, file creation dates, and file
expiration dates) contain correct time values.

Depending on the value specified for the TIMEPROMPTWAIT
parameter, the system acts in one of the following ways:

o If TIMEPROMPTWAIT is 0, no prompt or wait occurs; the system
boots immediately, using the time of the last boot as the
          system time.

o If TIMEPROMPTWAIT is a positive number less than 32768, one
prompt is issued and the value dictates how many seconds you
can take to respond with a time. If you do not provide a time
before TIMEPROMPTWAIT elapses, the system boots, using the
time of the last boot as the system time.

o If TIMEPROMPTWAIT is a number in the range of 32768 through
65535, the prompt for the time is issued at intervals starting
with 2 and doubling until 256 seconds is reached. If no
response is received, the prompts restart, with the 2-second
interval. This prompting process repeats indefinitely, until
          you specify a time.

I remember when Canada sold gasoline (and probably other things)
in imperial gallons, which were 5/4 US gallons. (Or close to that.)

I don't know which other units have US and Imperial versions
different by some strange factor.

The usual ones, quarts, pints, and so forth. A pint of beer in an
English pub is 568 ml, considerably larger than the US liquid pint of
473 ml.

Of course, here in the US we still have liquid and dry pints and
quarts and pecks and bushels, so who are we to complain?

Pints and quarts come in liquid and dry, but pecks and bushels are
dry. Liquid measures continue up with gallons.

A fluid quart is a quarter of a gallon; a dry quart is an eighth of a
peck, and a peck is a quarter of a bushel.

Aha! Wikipedia claims that there used to be a dry gallon, equal to
half a peck! Finally the quart=1/8 explained.

Dry measure is pretty much out of use; it was, in my youth, used only
for selling farm produce, and we weigh vegetables and fruit now. But
one still sometimes sees half-peck bags of apples. I suspect that
there is only one factory still making the bags, as they all look like
the one in the Wikipedia article.

Bushel baskets used to be so common that dime stores sold oilcloth
liners to enable housewives to use a basket to dampen ironing, but I
haven't seen a bushel since 1960.

I see them every fall, although these days they're more likely to be
sturdy cardboard boxes. We also see lots of half peck bags of apples,
both at farm stands and in the grocery stores. There appear to be at
least two producers of the bags, since they use different typefaces.

I think I still see them at farmstands, for a bushel of apples, e.g. They
also sell half-bushels of stuff.

Produce is sold by weight at the grocery store, but in US agricultural
industry and commodities markets, crops are still measured in bushels.

You city folk!

Yeah, they empty the truck and then a guy with a long tape measure and big
protractor sketches the truck box and they ruin that through a PC program
and it comes up with bushels and then .....

No. They talk bushes but measure in weight - just like the grocery store.
Note that shelled corn, oats, soybeans and wheat are all listed in the
referenced table.

Even the organic waste dump near here has a weighbridge.

The use of weights for scrap (and so recycling) is wrong; it's an active
disincentive to collect and re-use less dense material such as
polystyrene, as it is so bulky for it's weight, yet is non-biodegradable
in landfill.

Any non-biodegradable waste in a landfill is just money in the bank.

I'm not sure how much degrades anyhow. Landfills these days have an
impermeable clay base and a layer of heavy plastic lining. Each day's
trash is covered with dirt at the end of the day. I think when they close
the landfill they cover it with another layer of plastic, so the trash
never gets exposed to air or water. It's as if they're taking great piains
to see that the stuff *never* degrades.

Of course; organic decomposition releases smelly gases, which neighbors
would complain about--by suing them into bankruptcy.

Some landfills _do_ pipe water and bacteria down and gases back out,
which they then burn off (either openly or to generate power), but
that's really only feasible after the entire thing has been capped off.

Local landfill was capped and pipes put in, I guess to vent methane.
Someone then built nice, expensive, apartment houses across the street. I
don't know what the "official" name is, but I cLl them "dumpview
apartments." It seems like there's nothing they can do with the old
landfill, although it would seem if it has enough dirt on it they could use
it as a park.

I used to work for an engineering firm that designed and capped
landfills, and part of the work was going door to door periodically to
test for methane building up in the basements. People living next to
landfills do /not/ like the idea of landfill gas seeping into their
homes, let me tell you.

My school playing fields were constructed on an old landfill site. It
apparently conferred the advantage of good drainage.

The house my parents bought when they retired was built on an old landfill
site. Apparently some sort of raft system was used for each house built
there.

I have never heard of any gas or subsidence problems with either site.

... until some journalist figured it out and ran a story about how some
evil corporation/politician is trying to trick you into letting your
kids play on top of a pile of toxic waste. It's far cheaper to fence it
off than deal with the lawsuits and PR nightmare that comes from trying
to do something productive with it.
