If you mean the electronic devices it comes from their mode of
operation where a control grid varies the flow of electrons in the
same way a control wheel/lever controls the flow of liquid in a
mechanical valve.

As opposed to "tube", a word that bears no relation to the functioning
of the device.

I think I sense a dig there.

A "horseless" carriage? Wireless?

Give me a break.

Mmmm, nah, don't think I'll bother.

"tube" is good too, the thing is a glass tube on a plastic base with some
metal innards.

My point was they described what they *didn't* see. We, in the US, call
that "ass-backwards".

Yes, but the word is also used for devices that are not built
around glass tubes. Klystrons and magnetrons are rarely tube

It's not a tube, though, is it. It's closed at both ends.

And many aren't very tubular either:

But it says 'Made in England' on it; doesn't that make it a valve?

:) True, I guess. But if I remember my valve numbering correctly, that's
a US type number...

A "pipe bomb" is still a "pipe", even though it's closed on both ends.

That's because it's made using a piece of pipe, sawn off a larger piece.

And "tubes" (at least the classic round tubuarl looking vacuum tubes)
are made from a piece of glass tubing, sawn off a larger piece, with
the ends eventually sealed shut.

But it needn't be. And the functioning of the device is unlikely to be
affected by the construction method, whereas with a pipe-bomb (with the
ends crudely hammered over) the construction method is likely to affect
the way it explodes.

Nice try though. But this is my last word on the topic.

Many years ago I visited the BBC shortwave transmitter site in
Daventry England.

When you walked up the hill to the transmitting site you could
hear the news of the day with ionized air acting like a very over
driven very inefficient transducer. The station engineer a friend
of my father in law took me into the transmitter room and announced
that I was unlikely to ever see that much RF again. The finals used
an overhead crane to swap them out. Mostly glass tubes

I knew someone who worked for the RCA broadcast division (before they sold
it off), so one time I actually was at a UHF TV transmitter while it was
being tested. The tube was smaller than you mention, but needed two people
to change them.

I have about a metre long piece of copper wire from that installation,
"scrap" since it's too small for anything useful. But it's stranded. I'm
not sure what the gauge is, about as thick as a broom handle. So for
forty years, it's been a source of about #18 copper wire to use as
soldering gun tips. I cut off a bit, and shape it. It lasts about the
same as a commercial tip (which aren't plated), so for most of the time
I've had that soldering gun, I've not had to buy tips for it.

It has caps on both ends, but the pipe part is still a pipe.

The glass in a vacuum "tube" is a single piece only open on one end,
which does not match any other use I've seen of the word "tube".

Prior to the advent of flat screen LCD monitors, we all stared at
monitors that contained a glass CRT.

The letters in CRT stood for:

Cathode Ray _Tube_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathode_ray_tube)

The CRT itself was also most definetly not "tube" shaped as in pipe or
straw, but the word "tube" was part of its name as well.
