You have the Organization of American States (OAS), which is *not* a synonym for the USA. However, calling the USA "America" is understandable since the full name is so awkward. Similarly, the EU is often called simply "Europe" nowadays (to the chagrin of the Norwegians and the Swiss). Funny enough, the Cypriots see themselves as European because Cyprus belongs to the EU. However, geographically speaking they're Asian. Similarly, "Europe" extends to South America, where French Guiana belongs to France, and Africa, where Ceuta and Melilla belong to Spain. Marko

Hmph. Damn kids!
When I first read this (in Jackson, Miss., in the early 1960's, in a humor
column in the Jackson Daily News, which I delivered every afternoon for several
years), it ran
To those in other conutries, Yankee means someone from the US.
To those in other parts of the US, it means someone from the North.
To those in the North, it means someone from New England.
To those in New England, it means someone from Vermont.
To those in Vermont, it means someone who eats pie for breakfast, so a lot
of Southerners are Yankees!
Those from the post-Civil War western states were not considered Yankees in the
South (Texas and Mississippi at least, and I would guess elsewhere) of my
childhood, so the second line is more generic than in Mr. Sprunk's version.

Many can't even find the US itself on an unlabeled map. Is that because US maps put it in the middle rather than it's proper place on the LHS? <ducks and runs for cover> -- Paul Sture The final step of #heartbleed recovery is to call your mother, and advise her to change her maiden name -- @gojomo

Always a part of North America. Friends and coworkers from Mexico didn't consider themselves "norteamericanos", even after moving to the US. My HS Spanish teacher, who was from Panama, didn't consider Mexicans to be "norteamericanos" either. > For Panama, Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and > El Salvador the reference is a bit more floating. Indeed; the definition of "North America" seems to vary depending on whether the context also references South America, Central America and/or Latin America. > BTW: For Latin America, do you include Belize, which speaks English? I'm not sure; that's an odd one; it's certainly part of Central America. Spanish-speaking islands in the Caribbean, which is sometimes part of North and/or Central America and sometimes not, are also troublesome; that probably also depends on context. Countries that speak neither English nor Spanish nor Portuguese are also troublesome; for instance, even though French is a Latin-based language, French-speaking people aren't considered "Latinos". >>> "South Americans" is unambiguous, except some in the US might >>> misinterpret that as people from the South(east)ern US. >> >> Contrary to popular notions, US citizens are not that stupid and we >> know what South America means. > > Normally all land between the Darien gap and Tierra del Fuego, I > presume? Either the Darien Gap or the Panama Canal, depending. Whether various islands _near_ South America are considered part of the continent or not varies as well, just as the UK and Ireland are sometimes considered part of Europe and sometimes not. If the grouping Central/Latin America is used in the context, then it is part of that rather than North America. This is an indication that the distinction being made is cultural rather than continental.
