Interesting article about wrecking the user experience in order to
sell ads. Save me Usenet, you're my only hope!

Firefox + Adbock+, Ghostery & Flashblock. Adverts, what adverts?

NoScript on its own gets rid of a lot of ads and distinctly improves
the performance of many sites, particularly on older kit.

Since Adobe's recent mess up with certain Mac models* and Flash 13, I
am now running my main system Flash-free. All the Youtube items I have
been interested in so far have successfully displayed using HTML5 (albeit
with a pause before playing starts).

* my system wasn't on the list of affected models, but the Flash 13
installation was taking an unreasonably long time to complete so I aborted
it.

I do have Flash installed in openSUSE under a VM and that works fine for
the odd relic - only one found that I really wanted to watch since I did
the switch last weekend.

Toodle pip Adobe. You brought it on yourself.

That solves the issue for your particular use case, but doesn't impact
the weaknesses in the business model. And if you read the article,
you'll see the story is about Slate now charging a 'premium' membership
for the right to have the article on one single page instead of spread
across multiple page views. I'm surprised the New York Times hasn't
thought of that one. Hell, maybe they have.

It has been some years since I looked at weather.com, and I checked it
out after looking at the article. What a joke! I wonder if they even
understand why people visit their site. Weather Underground has also
remade their front page recently, and it's just terrible as well.
Thankfully weather.unisys.com is still very web-1.0 and there's nothing
there that gets in the way of the user.

I hope web sites that are deliberately awful start going out of
business. How many gawkers does the world need anyway?

FWIW, it also breaches the EU requirements on both cookies and access for the
disabled - although both of these breaches are commonplace, verging on
universal.

I load wunderground and I see the current stats on the weather (which is
what I want), the predicted hi/lo (which is what I want) and a radar
map, which I may or may not want. Then I have a list of weather stations
and can pick the one nearest me (or not, sometimes I pick one near where
I am going) to get all the info any weather dweeb would ever want.

But most the time I check the weather it is on my iPhone or iPad and I
use the Yahoo Weather app for that, or forecast.io.

Zero.

For local weather station access, APRS is the way to go. For forecasts the
24/7 NWS radio broadcasts are great. Unisys has all the models you want,
as well as imagery.

I wish someone would put a stake in the heart of LinuxToday, too. Used
to be such a great site: it could now be replaced with an RSS reader
and a script that fills up 90% of the page with crap advertising –
usually for Windows products. It's a shame to see how ugly LT's home
page is and remember what a great site it was back in 2000–2001. I
hope Brian Proffitt got rich; he certainly seems to have made a deal
with the devil.

All this and more are why I barely even touch the WWW these days. The
only thing I'd really miss is Google Books, which despite the horrific
nature of Google is so good that it almost makes up for the rest.
Almost.

I can't read the article. Site seems to be down.

Just a week ago I added a tech news site to my ad-blocking proxy because
they have taken to splitting up their articles into tiny three-paragraph
pages with loads of advertising, *and* they have made it impossible to see
the article on one page, or to print more than the current view.

So I would say this strategy can backfire.
