From the «this post sponsored by Netscape Navigator 3.4» department: Title: 'The browser is the operating system' 10 years on on mobile Author: Jean-Louis Gassée Date: Wed, 09 Apr 2014 07:39:05 -0400 Link: http://feeds.theguardian.com/c/34708/f/663871/s/3929d201/sc/15/l/0L0Stheguardian0N0Ctechnology0C20A140Capr0C0A90Csoftware0Einternet/story01.htm Podcast Download URL: http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Travel/Pix/pictures/2014/2/7/1391779877776/Smartphone-user-006.jpg Did Marc Andreessen really say that 'the browser is the OS', and what does the new information about app use on mobile mean for it? So it was declared in the early days: web apps will win over native apps. Why let the facts cloud an appealing theory? Marc Andreessen, the Netscape[1] co-founder, is credited with many bold, visionary claims[2]such as "Everyone Will Have the Web" (ca. 1992), "Web Businesses Will Live in the Cloud" (1999), "Everything Will Be Social" (2004, four years before joining Facebook's Board), and "Software Will Eat the World " (2009). "[I]f you grant me the very big assumption that at some point we will have ubiquitous, high-speed wireless connectivity, then in time everything will end up back in the web model." Q: Does the web browser become something like an operating system? A: No, it becomes a new type of platform. It doesn't try to do the things an operating system does. Instead of trying to deal with keyboards, mouses, memory, CPUs, and disk drives, it deals with databases and files that people want to secure transactions and things like that. We're going to make it possible for people to plug in anything they want. Bit of a step down from former positions, if you ask me. They were right, of course: we're all headed to a browser-rich world, and its name is probably "Chrome" unless someone provides an alternative. In an alternate universe I'd be looking to Microsoft to provide a competing solution: they're clearly rich enough in money and technical staff to be able to take on a challenge like this. Too bad under Ballmer they were focused only on preserving the Office/Win monopoly, and this clearly would take a huge wooden stake and drive it through that monopoly's heart. Sad though when you think about how many orders of magnitude greater resources are required in order to accomplish things that were basically accomplished on "primitive" (I use the word tongue in cheek) time-sharing systems of the 1970s. Imagine how many layers of abstraction go into a Word Processor running on Javascript, for example.
