I was researching something for an article at Pipedot and came across
these two interesting bits about Microsoft Word. As I'm shackled to
that abomination of soul-destroying suckage all day at work, these two
articles resonated for me.

"If you’re reading this, you probably have Microsoft Word installed on
your computer."

Er, no. I haven't used it for ten years. I brought home a corporate copy
from my then employer and never installed it, I preferred OpenOffice
even under Windoze. Now it's LibreOffice (under Debian) for the
occasional letter and LaTeX for serious documents. MS can KMA.

"It’s hard to function without it."

Only if you've bought into the MS BS.

Well you bought into the latex b/s, why wouldn't you buy into MS?

Using OpenSUSE 13.1 here, with LibreOffice.

That could be a new OS... :-)

Not that I'm deeply impressed with a server that returns this error;

"Interal Server Error."

Interal?

It's like "interred," as in "dead and buried." :)

I have a copy of Office 2011 for Mac - bought cheap on Amazon back when
I made the jump to an iMac (and self-employment) in 2012 - because I
still occasionally need to use Word documents from elsewhere, and
Apple's Pages couldn't reproduce the formatting. (I do make use of Excel
for tracking business costs, and working out what I owe the taxman.)

I've used Word professionally for more years than I care to remember -
from Word 2.0 all the way up to 2010, including the wacky 'hey kids,
let's make websites using Word' phase, the Office 'Assistant' phase, and
the accursed Ribbon. *spit* Best thing about the Mac version of Office,
other than the ability to export to PDF, as that it has an actual menu
at the top of the screen, thus saving me from losing my mind trying to
find particular features on the Ribbon.

Any Mac app that can print can export to PDF.

True, but the ability to export to PDF from Office is available on both
Mac and Windows version (2007 onwards).

The ability of Word 2013 to read a PDF and then, at least on simpler
documents, quite a good job of converting the text into a Word document
has been very useful to me. Too often, even copying a single sentence
from a PDF in Adobe Reader results in messed up text with broken
words/lines, odd extra characters, etc.

Try Preview, then. You can copy/paste from a PDF even across columns
and just get the text.
