Was nice while it lasted.

There's a moral here: don't rely on cloud storage. Providers come and
go. Dropboxers: you'll get your day too!

Indeed. I run my own rsync script with my own server. Took matters into
my own hands and away from DropBox 7 months ago.

I use unison with my own servers, and highly recommend it. It uses
the rsync algorithm, but saves you the trouble of writing the script
yourself. When not in a cron job, you can run it in interactive
mode and tell it exactly what to do with each change. Handy when
you know there's going to be a conflict. I wrap unison in my own
script so that I get an email if there's a conflict.

Interesting. I'll have to take a look at it. Thanks for the tip.

+1. The amount of coming and going of .com "cloud" services is
astounding. If you aren't paying, beware and expect nothing...

It's rather like savings accounts, credit card offers and insurance. On
those you get the sweet deals when you join but they aren't competitive
for "Loyal" customers - you've go to be prepared to keep moving on.

Yes. But the main difference is money has a universal common API and the
external interfaces of the myriad accounts are all compatible.

That's rather the opposite of most cloud services beyond basic file
storage (eg Dropbox) and maybe calendaring systems (just, if you are lucky).

eg if Facebook goes tits up how easy would it be to rescue your content?

That's a snap - don't have anything of importance on there! I don't (and
wouldn't anyway) store stuff on any cloud system that is not already backed
up on my file servers, I put whatever info on them to share only. When
Facebook disconnects (and I think it will eventually) all that info will be
gone to the bit heap in the sky - I warn people constantly not to trust any
data anywhere, back up your back ups!

Add domain registrars. I just got a godaddy renewal notice and the
price is double what it was when I first signed up.

Actually, as a linux user, it is obvious that I(or probable we) just
trust in cipher. It is really hard to puts some important file on a cloud
server without encryption. Backup? RAID can be used! For me, my most
precious file is on Github, never worried of lost.

For file sharing, not only self-hosted server can be used, but widely
used solution is also available. So, why use it?

Nothing lost at all.
