“Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for
the platforms of tomorrow,” said Facebook founder and CEO, Mark
Zuckerberg. “Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform
ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate.”

Another black day.

Clip from that page, since I had to figure out what Oculus is. Actually
sounds like an interesting company that has instantly just become LESS
interesting in the hands of FB. Oculus as a gaming experience: yes.
Oculus as an advertising platform: hell no. Go suck it, Zuck.

"
... Oculus VR, Inc., the leader in immersive virtual reality technology,
for a total of approximately $2 billion. This includes $400 million in
cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook common stock (valued at $1.6
billion based on the average closing price of the 20 trading days
preceding March 21, 2014 of $69.35 per share). The agreement also
provides for an additional $300 million earn-out in cash and stock based
on the achievement of certain milestones.

Oculus is the leader in immersive virtual reality technology and has
already built strong interest among developers, having received more
than 75,000 orders for development kits for the company’s virtual
reality headset, the Oculus Rift. While the applications for virtual
reality technology beyond gaming are in their nascent stages, several
industries are already experimenting with the technology, and Facebook
plans to extend Oculus’ existing advantage in gaming to new verticals,
including communications, media and entertainment, education and other
areas. Given these broad potential applications, virtual reality
technology is a strong candidate to emerge as the next social and
communications platform.
"

Also - Minus five points for using the word "verticals." Barf.

This sucks so bad!! I have been waiting and waiting for that product to
hit. I have been so excited for this. And now what, they are going to
want it to be a facebook device. WTF. I say it again, WWWTTTTFFF!!!!! I
may be the only one who feels this way but HATE FACEBOOK and Twitter. I
am sick to death of these two companies. I don't want either one in my
life. I was dying to get one of these devices. WHY!!!!!!!!

I can (though I prefer not to) imagine FB's "free" (advert-supported) VR.

Hmm, maybe they're imagining some kind of Google-Glass like experience,
where you're wearing your Glass, and as you scan the room,
Facebook-supplied data streams are showing you who in the room is part
of your friend list, etc., while the algorithms are also permitting them
to prepare for you, say, a sandwich advertisement around 11:30 AM for
the shop on the corner, or something like that?

It would be some kind of horrible amalgamation of the worst of Google
glass, invasive, personalized advertizing, and smarmy virtual friendship
a-la-Facebook. Count me out, thankyaverymuch.

There's another possibility: they never fully capitalize on it and the
tech bit rots into history, kind of like HP buying Palm's WebOS and then
doing nothing about it, etc. That way, no one wins and we all lose.

The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset, not an augmented reality
visor.

I see, thanks. But that's even more worrisome: the purchase makes no
more sense than when ebay bought skype. No obvious connection. Guess
if you've got that much money in the bank it's fun to spend it.

Only marginally related to the idea of Zuck trying to spend money, this
old classic from the Onion:

Even if its just limited to games, there are tremendous opportunities for
data mining... what missions you choose, where you go, what items you go
after, what choices you make given various situation, who you associate
with, what you discuss via in-game chat, etc. Now take that data, merge
it with what FB already has on you (or can purchase from others), and now
they have a much better idea of what to market to you. They could even
market to you in-game in subtle ways... logos, slogans, catch phrases,
NPC discussions, virtual signs / billboards / objects.

They could probably do a lot of this now if they put a lot of effort into
it. However, if they own the company developing the hardware, the APIs,
and the back-end, it becomes much easier to get game developers to
include this stuff in their games -- especially if there's revenue
sharing and cross-promotion. It'll probably increase developer interest
virtual life games (in semi-real life settings) like the Sims, Second
Life, etc.

The realistic and totally pervasive nature of a good VR experience is
probably going to make this an advertising gold-mine -- in games alone.
Now imagine Facebook as a VR experience. Hell, it will revolutionize
pr0n.

The NSA and GCHQ could plant spies in the virtual world, looking out for
potential terrorists: anti-war activists, environmental campaigners,
financial reform lobbyists, free software advocates. If they get their
hands on enough taxpayers money, the virtual world could even have
state-run agents provocateurs.

If you think Glass wearers look like dorks, image what you'd look like
going through life with an Oculus Rift strapped to your head, OK so it's
a prototype/developer edition.

<http://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/dcIcr4MvNHSLvmDq>

Thankfully it's not intended for going through life while wearing one,
but escaping from life ...

I'm not a facebook user, don't see myself as a future Glass or Oculus
user either, so the FB purchase doesn't bother me, I'd have been less
suprised if Google bought Oculus, but can see why Oculus fans would be
worried.

Whatever happened to Virtuality? they were making big noises about VR

There were quite a few a couple of decades ago - Division in Bristol was
another (another inmos spinoff). I think people thought it would never
catch on. Or now LCDs are cheap enough, light enough to wear... Or maybe
the patents have now run out..

Nvidia did exactly the same thing when they bought out 3DFX.

This is just wrong.... This technology was looking so awesome. And they
sell out for $2 billion??? And What's App is worth $16 billion. WTF
planet is this? Thought I was on Earth...

I can't really see what Facebook would want to do with this technology. One
can only hope they will leave Oculus independent to do their thing.

They are already losing developers. For example, Minecraft has already
abandoned plans for a Rift compatible version of Minecraft.

I was about to order a Dev Kit 2, but that's not happening. As far as I
am concerned, Oculus and the Rift are dead.

Well, thanks Facebook. Was promising technology and now I have to wonder
how many will be on board with this change of ownership. I get they like
having a lot of cash, but I feel like they have no faith. This technology
would have changed everything. Why sell out so early in the game well
before potential is even established let alone realized. Makes no sense
to me at all.
