It appears the fledgling site is being 'held hostage'

I won't be getting involved in this one, that's for sure. Too bad for
everyone. The way this whole recent transfer of power has played out
has been really awful - so amateur, so petty, so juvenile. So futile.
And in the name of "transparency" so much airing of grievances on line
and on the site. I hate it.

I might spend some time putting a good word in for frustrated soybeans
in hopes of getting Pipedot a little more attention. While Soy drags
itself through the muck, Pipedot just keeps getting better and better,
with none of this community nonsense.

Meanwhile, I am henceforth taking Usenet hostage too. I'm going to
shut it down unless every user pays me $20. Oh wait ...

See ya later, Soylent ... it was fun while it lasted.

This situation illustrates perfectly why web forums are a poor substitute
for Usenet.

Exactly. I'm looking at s'qute (http://squte.com/) as a kind of
best-of-both solution - it looks like a reasonably well-done karma-based
portal to comp.misc. Bob damn Dice, anyway, for fscking /. up so badly
with the beta.

That pretty much sums up the entire (short) history of soylentnews, as I saw
it from lurking at their IRC channel. I'm saddened that such a large part of
community was snatched by such bad project.

A couple of great quotes from the soy thread:

1 li694-22, we finally have a name!
2 I propose we call the new site altdelslashdot. No ctl because no one is
 in control.
3 li694-22.members.linode.com is people!
4 Fuck sale. *proposes boycott*
5 is Barrabas even a real person? I tell you, we should have freed the
 Nazarene instead.

Also the guy who had planned to pay the 2k and troll everyone by redirecting
the dns record to Slashdot beta. Awesome.

Bill, I was hoping you'd make the sale. Too much excitement for one day!

Spylentnews.org is currently down.
In the IRC logs someone admits its a DDoS attack:

That "ssssss" sound you hear is the sound of community spirit going up
in smoke. It will be a miracle if they recover from this, even though
I hope they do.

Start looking for those folks back on Slashdot next week. Amazing.

I'm not a Slashdot regular, nor have I been following the "spin off" sites
but, boy, there seems to be a *hell* of a lot of drama around. Kinda puts
me off visiting any of these new sites in the future. I'm enjoying
comp.misc though!

Dice must be laughing their asses off...

Too bad, I really like Soylent and still think it has a lot of
potential. I hope this isn't the act of disgruntled drama queens, that
would just be too pathetic for words....

Frankly, I do not think Dice has even noticed someone boycotting or leaving
slashdot. There simply weren't enough people.

This is what makes me think that Dice will go ahead with a total
Gawker-style redesign for Slashdot. Sure, people complained, but they kept
posting even if it was just to complain. It's all about getting ad
impressions and views of Slashvertisements.

#1519 — Soylent next steps

Message-ID<20140312150856.22b6cbde.rsw@therandymon.com>

Soylent admits now there was no DDoS attack, they simply hosed the DNS
records when they tried shutting down the Linode instances. Site is up
and running and they're posting interesting articles, which is good.

They're not out of the woods though: a lot of introspective posts about
what their community/business/financial model should be, and the
comments show a fair degree of disagreement.

I conclude you can't start with the community and end with the site.
You have to build the site and let the community come to it. There's
no obvious way for Soy to move forward now, the guy who ponied up $2K
seems benevolent but he hasn't said a word to date, and they have to
probably find a new name.

Good luck, soybeans.
