It's very difficult to have a discussion about online anonymity without
mentioning Tor[3]. Tor is best known for its secure browser, which will
allegedly protect your privacy as long as you avoid torrents, browser plugins
and document downloads, but now the team wants to expand its services even
further.

The link you posted
("http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/TheBoyGeniusReport/~3/7ssK_6f3S88/2")
actually goes to
"http://bgr.com/2014/02/28/tor-anonymous-instant-messenger/".

May I ask that you post the _real_ link in future?

Google already knows too much about me and everyone else - I don't want
to give them more.

[I can't speak for the other /. refugees, but I think you're doing a
good job with your stories. This post is intended to provide
constructive feedback, not be the digital equivalent of pointing a
finger and throwing childish insults...]

I totally understand the concern. Maybe that will mean not linking to
articles from BGR. In theory, it's possible. But in reality, a lot of
news sites now use Google's Feedproxy as their RSS provider, and I don't
know why, since it's a piece of cake to have your own CMS do it
in-house.

That's the problem with Google, isn't it? They provide services
people/companies like/want to use, and their products are often better
than the competition. The user then gets sucked into giving data to
Google.

Incidentally, have you noticed between Pipedot, Soylent, and comp.misc,
there's frequently just a little bit of overlap, but not too much? Very
cool that among three sites there's such interesting diversity of stuff
to read.

Next week I was thinking of posting something to all three sites to see
how it plays out in the comments.

I expect Google make it worth their while.

A quick look suggests that the Boy Genius direct URL is listed by
Newsbeuter as the first of the 'Links' following the text. So it is
certainly possible to avoid the Google redirect/intercept from your
usenet articles.

Those of us who greatly prefer participating in usenet to coping with a
plethora of blogs, won't necessarily see Soylent or Pipedot at all, or
won't contribute anything there. (That of course applies equally to
Slashdot).
