By Samuel Gibbs > Samuel Gibbs[1] Real may have been lousy software in a lot of ways, but the fact is they were able to deliver audio and some video over freaking dial-up connections, which is pretty impressive. Their problem wasn't their technology, it was their business model. They went "full retard" on the bundled-spyware, toolbar, invasive advertising route and it ruined their brand. To this day - well over 14 years after the first time I used Realplayer - I'm able to make the 'buffering buffering' joke in relatively full confidence that people will get it. *That said,* please give us an alternative to Youtube. Ever since Google bought it, I've been avoiding it like it's syphilis. I even skip links to youtube videos friends send: it's clear Google is keeping close tabs on every video I watch. They don't deserve that information. Vimeo is decent, but bandwidth heavy (and I don't have much bandwidth). If Real can take their bandwidth-conserving approach and give Youtube some competition, that would be good. For that matter, recently even in good bandwidth situations, Youtube seems to bog down. I don't know what they're doing, but they're doing it wrong.

This new service will just be bought out by someone else - Facebook or Microsoft come to mind - and it will be basically a Youtube in different slant. No, real, future-proof technologies must go peer-to-peer. -- Andy

Google forcing everyone onto GooglePlus to use it was kind of the last straw for me. As for peer to peer, or federation: awesome!
