#439 — Leafnode is great

Whoever suggested Leafnode, in conjunction with my favorite reader
slrn, is wonderful. I have used slrnpull over the years, but Leafnode
has such a simple, almost non-existent interface, where it will
automatically start pulling groups when your reader requests them, it
is genius. And, it makes reading news _so_ much snappier.

I use it too, and agree. I also use it to keep a local archive of
posts. In the same vein, but for IMAP mail connections, is offlineimap,
which clones your IMAP "repository" locally. Anything you do to the
local repository gets transmitted back up to your server the next time
you connect.

For example, I will use it before a long train trip to get a local cache
of my "sent mail." Then (while off line), weed out stuff I don't care
to keep, then sync it next time I connect.

The danger is of course one day you decide you don't want to use it
anymore, and delete the local cache without first turning off syncing.
Guess what happens next time your machine connects? ...

Hmm, then what's the advantage of IMAP + a local cache vs. good old POP
that includes a local copy by default?

If you like Leafnode, you'll probably like Leafnode-2 too. I have it
running on Arch Linux.
