From the all our packets pass through Brussels department: Title: Europe pushes for a less US-dominated internet Author: Jon Fingas Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2014 10:15:00 -0500 Link: http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/12/europe-pushes-for-a-less-us-dominated-internet/?ncid=rss_truncated [image 1] The European Union is more than a little jittery about a US-centric internet after learning the extent of the country's mass surveillance. Accordingly, the European Commission has proposed a whole host of measures that would shift control to the... I don't see this as offering the least benefit to the average person...to companies/Corporations who compete with US rivals it will offer huge benefits and seeing as these are the real paymasters of our political classes on both sides of the Atlantic I feel that to be the real driving force at play.

Oho, they proposed measures. In a strongly worded fashion, I trust? Seriously, I think we had some decent privacy laws in Europe. Europe ruined it with their agreement to forward travelers data, banking data and allowing European companies to transfere personal data to so called safe harbours. It appears, the secret agencies in Europe were working together with the NSA most of the time. Example in case for Germany http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/spiegel-reveals-cooperation-between-nsa-and-german-bnd-a-909954.html In Germany the cooperation was intensified under chancellor Schroeder (left wing party) and coninued under chancellor Merkel (conservatives). Generally, the European secret agencies were all working together with the NSA http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/nov/01/gchq-europe-spy-agencies-mass-surveillance-snowden Basically, if Europe once to strengthen privacy and avoid e-spionage, they need to put their own agencies on a much shorter leash first. I can only imagine how difficult this would be. Considering Snowdens revelations, good luck with trying to curb agencies that are - technically and morally - capable of placing falsified evidence on oponents computers and thus utterly destroy them. http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/msnbc/sections/news/snowden_cyber_offensive1_nbc_document.pdf (p.11) From a technical point of view, it shouldn't be too difficult to get control over the European part of the internet. Is would be possible to set up a couple of own root-dns servers, let them query domains from US counterparts and overwrite/extend whats not acceptable. From there, serious negotiations could start. Safe habour laws could be stopped, forcing US companies who want to do business in Europe to have these datacenters in Europe as well. But probably all relevant politicians pushing for such changes would either have a sudden change of heart or found out to be criminal, proven by finding some child-porn or evidence for eating little kittens on they PCs. I don't think, anything will chang anytime soon. -- Trolling is a art! My public-key is available on http://tinyurl.com/ps9r99y
