A message on /. claims that they have Bruce Perens on board.

The site "http://soylentnews.org/" is not active yet, but it should be a matter of hours.

Aww, I was hoping they would go with the slashslash.dot idea (assuming
they could have gotten one of the new top-level domains). It combined
the "joke" of slashdot's original name while at the same time
suggesting they were "slashing" slashdot.

Also, I hate lentils ;-)

A gTLD like ".dot" costs about $185,000, so that is very unlikely.

Soylentnews.org is a temporary name, it would probably lead to trademark issues. They will organize a contest for a new name.

Heavens, no! This might be funny for some days, but if the site ever
really becomes good, it would be annoying to always bear in name the fact
that it started as just an offspring of disgruntled slashdot users. Let
the site stand on it's own! So, please, don't fall back on using any name
with "slash" in it. It's embarrassing.

Soylentnews with the tag line "Soylentnews is people" is a great. I
really hope they will stick to it.

I just checked out the site and signed up for a user name, just in
case. But it's running phpBB at the moment. I wonder if that's
permanent?

I really like(d) slashcode. But phpBB isn't going to make very many
people happy *at all.* Perhaps it's just a place to call home while
they get the real code ready?

The phpBB forum is temporary. They already have Slashcode running on a test server. They intend to roll it out on the live server today.

They're trying to get slash running real soon now (today). It's perl and
based on old libs.

That's really great news. I look back whenever someone posts a screenshot of an old Slashdot running on (NeXT, BeOS, whatever) from the late 90s and I think, "that's a perfectly useable site."

I think Web 3.0 sucks. I miss Web 1.0.

You're probably kidding, but just for laughs, check out Mateusz Viste
over at newsgroup comp.infosystems.gopher. He's written a new gopher
server in Python, called Motsognir. It's ANSI C and he's hoping to get
it running on ARM. It's pretty fascinating.

Also checkout gopherpedia,
by a guy who scrapes wikipedia and makes it avaialble on gopher,
primarily (I think) for the intellectual challenge. It's surprisingly
usable, and you get the same amount of information in about 1/10th of
the download, since it's text instead of HTML. Pretty neat.

We're not the only nostalgic geeks around here ...

Have they forked it up to github yet? IIRC the production code base has
been a closed source private fork for about 8 years.

I just wonder if Unicode or select-quote-reply will get added first. I
have an additional idea, but it'll start thermonuclear war, so hopefully
there's a private discussion list too.

You are basically correct, but at this point, it seems worth it to support just
as a proof of concept. If in a month or a decade we have to migrate elsewhere,
that's fine in my book. It seems from the wiki that the profit/non-profit
aspect is still not set in stone. And if Bruce Perens gets involved, that
could seriously help.

Though do note that slashdot always had on every page that comments were owned
by the poster.

Personally I'd like to see something that looks exactly like slashdot, but
with a distributed usenet backend. Maybe a commercial slashcode UI front-end
with advertisements that profit the web-front-end hoster, but with anyone able
to interface to the distributed usenet backend. Yes, that is total pipe dream,
but maybe in a hundred years someone will get around to it...

Well you could of course have a web site interface to Usenet that uses a
Slashdot-like Karma system to moderate posts <wonder why nobodys thought of
that before ;-), and it took me less than 100 years>.

But without some way of communicating the moderations to other sites, users
are still locked in (tho less than with a forum site).

You could add a layer on top of Usenet to send 'mods' around, but Usenet has a
lot of inertia - there are hundreds of programs that use it and they would all
need to be updated. This is what killed off Usenet II, which was a tiny update
in comparison.

So I think a new network is the only solution.

Holy crap! I'm just starting to scratch the surface at squte, but it seems awesome. I've just requested a password, and I'm going to try using it instead of Google Groups.

How long have you been working on this? (Less than 100 years, as you said, but could perhaps be a little more precise? And don't say "less than 10 years"!)

You could add a layer on top of Usenet to send 'mods' around, but Usenet has a lot of inertia - there are hundreds of programs that use it and they would all need to be updated. This is what killed off Usenet II, which was a tiny update in comparison. So I think a new network is the only solution. regards ~tdk -- View this thread at http://squte.com/node/4376#comment-10218

I quite like what I see at s'qute in terms of overall concept and feature set. I'm not sure it's quite done yet, or how well it will scale to a larger userbase, but I'm definitely willing to give it a try once it seems fully operational.

tdk, can you tell us a bit more about the state of completion and when you think the site will be ready for general usage (e.g., reading, posting, moderating, account management), or even for testing purposes?

Well, it's ready now for sufficiently small values of 'ready'.

You can certainly read, post, moderate and generally test it.

account management is a sore point. I don't like websites with a set of elite
editors or moderators so, although the framework supports this, I won't be
making any 'special' users. All users can post, comment and moderate equally.

We can rely purely on the karma system to manage users. I will only delete
posts or comments if I am legally required to do so and only delete users if
they are obviously spamming. There is one exception to the 'no special users'
rule, which is the admin user "s'qute", which is me. To stop any conflict of
interest I have a separate account 'tdk' and I won't post stories, comment or
vote as admin (except admin pages).

The site needs a lot of polish, bug-fixing and maybe features.

The main issues are:

performance ATM for a first visit the page load time is almost a second. and
this will get worse with more users. The easiest fix is to upgrade the
hosting, the advertising doesn't yet support the hosting costs but I'm
prepared to put more money in it to keep the site alive. I'll monitor it and
look at upgrading if the average page load time goes above a second.

look & feel It has a 90's look & feel, which fits well with the Slashdot look
but I'd like to use Ajax more and this should improve performance as well.

The form above the comments (with 'threshold' etc) should use Ajax to expand
the comments instead of reloading the page. It's good the way slashdot has all
the comments on one page and squte.com should work the same way, so initially
I'll put another list box with 'hide threshold' on it, changing this will load
more comments in the background. The site works well without javascript and
I'll try to keep it that way.

Features there are some diffs from Slashdot, e.g. viewing others votes. I
think that sock-puppetry could be a problem, so as a defence all the votes
made by a user are visible to all other users. This should make sock-puppets
obvious - but also might lead to 'revenge' or 'reward' voting. So I'm open to
changing this and other features depending how they work out in practice.
Really it's up to you to speak up if there's anything you want changed.

The main things I'm working on are ajaxifying, improve usenet posting, and
adding more filtering options.

bugs There are bugs, for example the wrapping of quotes isn't working and
there are probably others.

I'm excited to receive any bug reports or feature requests but please bear in
mind this is a hobby for me. I have a day job and a family and can only update
the site in the odd hour at lunchtimes and weekends, so I can't give any
guarantees about timescales. I'd love to be able to give up my day job and
work on squte full-time but that doesn't seem likely ATM.

Cool. I'd like to start using it. Is there anyway I can sign into it and keep the userid wjwlsn? It won't let me create that account (says it already exists, I guess based on past postings of mine), and I can't get it to send me a password for that userid. I did create a new userid (wjwlsn_94460) to start looking around, but I'd rather just use the one that I've been using.

Also, how often does it sync with your nntp spool?
