The "wireless operator" was really a telegrapher. That's what was on the Titanic and on the ships that heard the Titanic's pleas for aid. Unfortunately, in the early days, the wireless operator would close his station at 10 or 11 pm and the ship could *not* be contacted until morning. Later on there were rules that required a wireless operator to always be on duty... though obviously *not* necessarily the *same* person as operator, but one of the operators had to be on duty at all times. -- numerist at aquaporin4 dot com

Most likely this distinction arose on account the earliest use of wireless transmission involved the simple on/off keying of the carrier wave[1] (sidebands and all with the earliest spark transmitters) to send telegraphic messages using Morse code, hence the phrase "Wireless Telegraphy". The later development of amplitude modulation used for broadcasting to domestic wireless radio sets led to the term 'radio telephony' (as well as wireless telephony). The expression to 'listen to the radio' or 'tune the radio into kxyl (or 2LO or whatever)' seems to have given rise to the name 'radio telephone'. Inevitably, 'wireless telegraphy' would become shortened to 'wireless' and 'wireless voice communication' referred to as 'radio telephony' to maintain the distinction. It's quite easy to see how the phrase, "they could not establish contact using radio-telephone, so they tried wireless.", came about. By that time, the use of narrow band filtering in the recievers (perhaps just a matter of audio filtering) allowed much greater ranges to be achieved for the low bandwidth digital morse code transmission over am voice transmission for similar transmitter power levels. Wireless telegraphy would have been regarded as 'The More Rugged' mode of wireless communication, hence when they couldn't communicate using the radio telephone, they then resorted to using a system that was known to offer a much better chance of establishing communication under such marginal conditions. [1] On / off keying a "Carrier Wave" to transmit morse coded signals has been abbreviated by the 'Ham Fraternity' to "CW". Other forms of modulation are readily identified by acronyms such as AM, FM and SSB (USB or LSB, typically with the carrier wave suppressed by 30 db or more). -- Regards, J B Good

"CW" is an abbreviation for, "Continuous Wave", to distinguish other forms of transmission (alternator, electronic) from spark transmissions which were a series of Logarithmic Decrement bursts. Yes, it does apply to Ham Morse on a regular basis, but is a misnomer. Morse Code is also AM in the simple case of on/off keying of the carrier and does have sidebands, the bandwidth of which is dependent on the sharpness of the keying.

Entirely true for on off keying. Alternative methods of sending morse code with a continuous wave included frequency shift keying (also using a key click filter to minimise unnecessary sidebands). It's been almost half a century since I was studying for (and passed) my RAE, hence the 'sloppiness' in my use of the terminology ( for which I apologise). -- Regards, J B Good

The radios (both receiver and transmitter) would more than likely have been powered off either batteries or some form of local (to the transmitter or receiver) generator.

Originally, the transmitters were spark gaps, which tended to be broad, but it didn't matter, not that many uses for radio at the time. I think that's why shipboard radio operators were often named "Sparky". Michael

| Battery power was not uncommon for a wireless receiver.
+---------------
In fact, it was so common that "B+" became synonymous for
the positive side of the main D.C. voltage in circuits, the
name coming from the "B battery" used for the vacuum tube
plate (anode) supply:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_(vacuum_tube)#B_battery
...
Even when the plate voltage rail is fed by a power supply
rather than a battery, it is generally referred to as the
"B+" line in American schematics.
As late as my college years, 90 volt B batteries were still
readily obtainable at electrical supply houses and even at
some hardware stores [the kind that catered to those living
way out in the country].
-Rob
p.s. If you read the full article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_(vacuum_tube)
you will learn [if you don't already know] that "A batteries"
were used for the filament (cathode) heater supplies, and
"C batteries" were used for negative grid bias supplies.

Yep and that's why valves were used in amplifiers; a small voltage/current as produced by a record or tape pickup is turned into a larger one which can drive loudspeakers. -- Paul Sture The final step of #heartbleed recovery is to call your mother, and advise her to change her maiden name -- @gojomo

That's short for "Thermionic Control Valve" which is a very descriptive term for a triode valve (the grid acts as a control on the electron flow in a similar way to the gate in a control valve used to control a flow of liquid). Even a rectifier diode valve is the equivilent of a non-return valve used in fluid control. It's certainly better than the american "vacuum tube" name (the earliest valves were bulb shaped rather tube shaped - what the fuck was that all about?). The only time we in the UK refer to a 'tube' is when we refer to a CRT "Picture Valve". Since this use, in the UK, is a unique reference to this one specific type of "Valve". It also helps that it did originally have a 'tubelike' appearance anyway and the fact that the T in 'CRT' stands for 'Tube' also legitimises such a contraction. We routinely use _that_ one americanism without any prejudice as to its origin since it's so much less of a mouthfull to say (or write), i.e. it suits our needs to do so and isn't such a 'stretch' from its functionally determined appearance of 'Tubiness'. :-) Referring to everything else as a 'valve' rather than a 'tube' means we have a linguistic advantage when writing up any articles on valve TV sets with a colour tube. :-) -- Regards, J B Good
