In the market for an Acer Aspire Switch 10. Can I use an external HD? I am having a hard time finding this info. I think it has a USB 2.0 on the keyboard for charging purposes. Can I use this for an ext. HD? Also, I see many usb 3.0 HDs, will this also work in a 2.0? If the answer is yes, I can use an ext hd - Is there a quality (fairly inexpensive) mini ext. HD you would recommend? This is for my daughter who is college bound. I've always been a mac guy but she loves windows and wants this Aspire Switch 10. However, if she can't download school work to an external HD than we'll have to figure out an alternative. Thanks for your assistance.

Last time I looked, it was actually cheaper to buy a USB disk enclosure and a separate HDD than a USB hard drive, although possibly not as robust. She'd have to have a lot of 'school work' if a 16gb USB flash drive (about $12) wasn't enough. -- tdk Take back your Internet! http://squte.com/Webertarian-Manifesto View this thread at http://squte.com/usenet/acer-aspire-switch-10-external-hd?src=u#comment-38916

You'd better test it. The big question is if the USB port is powered or not, and given how lightweight and energy efficient they seem to want that device to be, there's not guarantee. I too would carry a fatty USB flashdrive until I've tested it.

This is the unit she has her heart set on. I'm not as computer savvy as I should be so please forgive the ignorance. A flash drive sounds like it may be the way to go but they're not very big (memory). I did see a SanDisk 64gb for USB2.0, is that a viable option. I found a couple 128gb flash drives that are 3.0, would they work in a 2.0 port? Also, I don't know if the port is powered. She does plan to use it for storing pictures, the file sizes will quickly exceed the capacity of the Acer. http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model-datasheet/NT.L47AA.004

I just tried to live chat with sandisk tech support. I asked if their usb 3.0 128gb flashdrive would work in an unpowered usb 2.0 port. The answer, yes- the usb 2.0 Flashdrives will work in a powered usb 3.0 port. I had to re-read my question and yes, they answered the exact opposite of what I was asking. Frustrating.

Lastly, I found this 128gb usb 2.0 but has some poor reviews on amazon. Is it slow because it's 128gb or because it's SanDisk? Would I be better off getting her a 64gb to start? And I still haven't figured out if the port is powered or not. http://www.sandisk.com/products/usb/drives/cruzer-glide/

The real point was that an external drive of ANY sort is possibly not needed as you can simply slip a memory card into it as is. (Though backup might require something.) -- Rod

The USB 2.0 port should be able to power the flashdrive with USB 2.0 power: max 500 mA. The specs of the flashdrive should specify its power requirements. -- Kees Nuyt

Exactly my thought too! At first I thought the OP was describing some sort of ethernet gateway router box (it has the word "Switch" in it) but a quick google reveals it to be a rather indifferent netbook cum tablet. BTW, I like the self referencing link to this thread in your sig. :-) -- J B Good

My Blackberry Playbook tablet is 16gig, and it took a long time to fill it up, even though I was using it to download large files, books out of copyright and the like. Of course, I have a desktop so I can transfer as needed, but for a lot of use, 16gig is good enough, especially when it keesp the whole laptop small. Michael

You're talking about one of these, with the massive 1TB SSD? http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/models/laptops/aspireswitch10 It looks like most models have USB 3.0. And don't worry, USB 3.0 is fully backward compatible with 2.0. It's just a faster connection if both the drive and the port support USB 3.0. For external storage, flash drives are durable, portable, and hold more than most people need. 16 or 32 GB is cheap. If she's going to work with media (photography, art, video editing, etc) then perhaps a WD Passport external drive. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1000#Tab3
