cool-old-term is a terminal emulator which tries to mimic the look and
feel of the old cathode tube screens. It has been designed to be
   eye-candy, customizable, and reasonably lightweight.

It now uses the Konsole engine which is powerful and mature.

This terminal emulator requires Qt 5.2 or higher to run.

I'm tempted by this thing. But it seems to get /real/ street cred
you should just access your Linux/BSD box over an old, amber
monitor and have the real thing.

Guess by today's standards those old monitors are probably energy
sucks, no? I've got to admit though, I found the amber very
pleasing and easy on the eyes.

Does it have flicker, hum bars and a warm "bloom" around densely lit
parts of the screen, does it bulge for large areas of inverse video? My
favourite terminal back in the day was a Qume QVT102.

I chucked out an old green monitor and "Hercules" ISA card a while ago,
still got a VT320 somwhere, probably parked on top of the VAXserver 3300.

The default colour is amber on my PuTTY ...

Hey, I never looked into changing the colors on PuTTY. I'll have
to give it a try - thanks!

Amber monitors didn't have much flicker, as far as I can tell they
used "slow" phosphors, and the background color (phosphor not
activated by the electron beam) was dark-amber, not black.
Up to a point, less contrast is less eye strain.
I still own a 1983(?) Ericsson PC-XT with its amber monitor, but I
don't use it anymore.

True enough.

Yeah, installed a fair few of those, pretty decent clones at the time.

I think it was a grey imported one that only had a 2-pin main lead which
gave me a half mains voltage zap when I was attaching an Ethernet
T-piece to it ...

http://www.secretgeometry.com/apps/cathode/ (Mac - no relationship, not
even a customer. Curious though).

Cheers,
Ian
