Noise power density (what you graph in a power vs. frequency graph)
has units of power/Hz. But amplifiers are more often discussed
in terms of voltage (sometimes current), where voltage (at a
fixed impedance) goes as the square root of power.

So, the units of (voltage) noise density are Volts/(square root Hertz).
This will the seen in graphs of noise in amplifier data sheets.

The square of a frequency figures in power calculations. This is, for
example, the reason why deep bass response is difficult and expensive
to obtain.

You really learn that in the US? That explains everything ;-)
There isn't such a thing like a derived unit in this context. A meter is
a meter, and a scale factor (centi = 1/100) is a scale factor. Both
together don't make a new or derived unit.

Oh my...
1 Hz == 1/s
So you can say 25 kmHz instead of 25 km/s for a velocity.
Did you ever have physics and mathematics at school?

Perhaps in the US, that's why sometime a spaceshuttle explodes or
something like that...
No, units are not just a standard that may happen differently, they are
as they are and not subject to discussions.

I learned CGS originally, in which "cm" is the base unit and "m" is the
derived unit. Later, we switched to MKS, which has a similar problem:
"kg" is the base unit and "g" is the derived unit.

You're approaching this from a purely algebraic perspective, in which
each letter _must_ be a different variable: "cm" means "c*m". However,
this particular field allows multi-letter variables: a "cm" is not
"c*m"; it is an independent unit that just happens to be 1/100th of an "m".

What, you think it's a "k^2m^2"? I have _never_ seen that--or "(km)^2".

I suppose one could write g=9.8mHz^2 (not 9.8mH^2z^2), which is where I
expect you're going with that, but I've never seen it.

> Did you ever have physics and mathematics at school?

Of course. The only point we disagree on is whether "cm" is a unit
itself or only a multiplier times a unit.

Well, we did have a spacecraft crash into Mars because someone screwed
up a US/metric units conversion. OTOH, an airliner in Canada (cf. Gimli
Glider) run out of fuel mid-flight due to a bad imperial/metric
conversion, so we're not alone.

> No, units are not just a standard that may happen differently, they are

Ah, a purist. I'm not trying to justify people not following the
standards, as I try to follow them myself when feasible; what I am doing
is trying to explain non-standard behavior in others and why it is so
common, which if purists paid attention to, would result in better
standards that people would choose to follow--rather than having it
shoved down their throats.

And the problem in both cases wasn't Imperial Units, but the fact that

... and such errors are an inevitable cost of converting from one system
of units to the other. If you manage to eradicate the old units, as
Canada mostly has, that is a short-term problem. If you don't and keep
using both sets of units, as the US has, it becomes a long-term problem.

Shortly after the Gimli Glider incident, I saw a cartoon showing a
fuel tech on the wing of a plane with a ruler in his hand, calling

The Gimli glider was an amazing piece of both bad and good airmanship.
Bad choice of units but they did minimal damage in the landing. They flew
the ac out of Gimli and it wasn't very long later I was on an AC flight from

Toronto to San Francisco and though I recognized the registration. As
I passed the cockpit on exiting I asked. Yup it was the Gimli Glider.
Capt looked at me and said I guess we (his crew) know which units to use. :)

And not entirely the crew's fault.

They had double luck in that one of them knew about Gimli, and the other
was actually a rather good glider pilot.

The landing was a case of phenomenal airmanship. I'm not sure I'd count
the fuel issue as bad airmanship since it was a paperwork exercise on
the ground. It was ultimately the pilot's fault for trusting the ground
crew to provide the correct conversion factor, but I suspect most pilots
would make the same mistake in those (very unusual) circumstances.

It was also a very unfortunate combination of circumstances. If the
breaker hadn't kept tripping, the ground crew hadn't allowed it to fly
anyway, then the gauges would have shown the problem.

I suppose, but Hz is meant to be for periodic quantities.
Now, I suppose if someone drives to school every day, and back
home at night, that is periodic.

To make it more interesting, physics is more often done in
radians/second, where mathematically radians are more fundamental,
and the radians are usually not written. Angular frequency usually
has units of s^-1. In that sense, Hz is 2*pi*s^-1.

they should.

I believe ml or mL on all products I have seen in the US.
Especially since they might want to sell those products in SI
countries, but I think cc has been banned for many years.

It might be that cc is used for engine displacement for small
engines, maybe in casual conversation. US car engines have been
in liters (US spelling) for many years now.

It might be used in casual conversation in the medical world,
but in that case, makers often want to sell in all countries
without repackaging, and so I am pretty sure they would
actually use ml on the label.

I *know* that in the distant past (circa 50 years ago) I have seen syringes
labeled with *both* mL and cc. The milliliter and the cubic centimeter are
*extremely* close as measures of volume, so that for practical purposes they
are the same.

If memory serves hypodermic syringes used to be labeled with "cc" for
cubic centimeters, but I think they are now labeled mL instead.

Small engine displacements are still listed as cc's however:

More than just casual conversation or small engines, take a look at
this Irish government table of tax rates by engine size:

http://www.environ.ie/en/LocalGovernment/MotorTax/MotorTaxRates/MotorTaxRatesBasedonEngineSize/

Note the heading c.c. on the engine size column, and the final
entry 3001 or more. Coon use here is cc for all sizes, I think for much the
same reason that LED output is given in millicandella even when it reaches
10,000 or more of them.

While you're there cringe at the rates.

True, but are there many who cannot handle µ in, e.g., MIME-encoded
ISO-8859-1?.
