There is Canadian English which is somewhat of a mix of the two.

Nobody would drink that little coffee. A typical ceramic coffee mug intended for use at home or office is indeed 8oz (237mL); I'm not a coffee drinker, but I've asked coworkers and they tell me that a larger mug would get cold before they drank it all--and going back to the coffee pot gives them a needed mental break. OTOH, insulated "travel" coffee mugs are typically 16oz (473mL) or larger, intended for drinking while stuck in traffic on the way to work. Starbucks sizes: * short 8oz, 237mL * tall 12oz, 355mL * grande 16oz, 473mL * venti (hot) 20oz, 591mL * venti (cold) 24oz, 710mL * trenta 31oz, 917mL S -- Stephen Sprunk "God does not play dice." --Albert Einstein CCIE #3723 "God is an inveterate gambler, and He throws the K5SSS dice at every possible opportunity." --Stephen Hawking

The woollen mill near home* in the 70s boasted a special department for the wool from the shitty end of the sheep, and it was known as "dags". * that was in West Yorkshire which at the time was chock full of woollen mills; only few are still in business in the textile trade. -- Paul Sture The final step of #heartbleed recovery is to call your mother, and advise her to change her maiden name -- @gojomo

The problem with the stone is that there are >> two versions: 14 lb. and 20 lb, > >Really? Where? I have never in my life come across a 20lb stone. Nor me! Just for laughs, I 'googled' "20lb stone" and the first hit was a Mass units converter showing that 20 pounds is equal to 1.42857 Stone. I guess the only stone that would weigh 20Lbs would be the type you might find on stoney ground (and a large one at that!) which also happens to be the weight of stone used in Highland games (eg Throwing a 20Lb stone). Perhaps this reference to a 20Lb stone is the reason for the confusion? -- Regards, J B Good
