Oh, nostalgia, where is thy sting?

I spent a number of years jammed into various broom cupboards laughingly
referred to as "computer rooms" installing PDP11/34s which were doing
process control of crisp (US: chip) bagging machines - we were controlling
the weighing process in an attempt to meet the regulatory requirement
not to produce underweight bags of crisps while at the same time trying
to reduce the "giveaway" (the amount of product over the marked weight)
in each bag. The code was written in a mixture of MACRO-11 and RTL/2
and interfaced to the bagging machines using GEC "Media" interfaces
which allowed us to read outputs from the weigh cells on the machines
and issue commands back to them, such as "make a bag" and "start/stop
feeding product into the weigh pan".

Far and away the most interesting place I've ever worked in my career. I
also worked on systems to weigh ingredients for biscuits (US: cookies),
to weigh and count the biscuits themselves (if they're too thin, the
packet is underweight, if too thick, the end seal on the pack won't close
properly, exposing the end biscuit in the package), I also did stuff to
weigh & control the thickness of chocolate coating on biscuits, to weigh
and record the amount of waste leaving the factory - a system memorably
called "WMPIGS" (after the ultimate fate of the factory waste) and to
weigh pallets of finished product leaving the factory.

Happy days, and as many free biscuits/bags of crisps as you could eat.

One of the reasons. It differs only by one letter from my given name, I'm
6'3" and have been 20 stone in the past (although back down to 16.5 at the
moment), and it's what my friends have been calling me for decades.

I must admit that working for a crisp & biscuit manufacturer didn't do a
whole lot for my weight. I used to sit in my office and watch millions
of chocolate digestives go past every day. And you wouldn't believe how
nice freshly cooked crisps are.

I was a bit over 21 stone this time last year. I'm now a bit under 17
stone although I've kept it fairly static at 17 stone since Christmas.
Aiming to lose a bit more now...!

How big are those stones? Pebbles? Boulders?

Sorry, here it is :-)

I am sure most of our American readers are either confused or scrambling
for Google to find out just what that means.

No need to consult Google. In American units, that's almost exactly 992
cups of corn starch.

What? One stone or 20 stone is 992 cups of corn starch?

14 lb. So, when I really *was* "Huge", I was 280lb.

Interesting that although America has retained much obsolete British
terminology, usage and units, they have discarded the stone. And the
fortnight.

But of course the Unix "units" program retains both
"stone" and "fortnight". And let us not forget "furlongs"
(660 ft, or 201.168 m), which lets us express the

Apart from, of course, DEC using the microfortnight.

When one did an RSX11M build, when it got to the point of assembling
the kernel, depending on what you'd previously told it the clock frequency
was, it told you to go and get a cup of coffee or tea...
