Affect/effect and one I mounted a personal campaign about a dozen years or so ago: assure/insure. Back then the online version of Merriam Webster had the wrong version of that. I had a major problem with the fact that the online version of the OED cost was so expensive. How could we defend correct spelling when the only decent online reference works were several hundred bucks a year? -- Paul Sture "In that case," said Napoleon, "let us wait twenty minutes; when the enemy is making a false movement we must take good care not to interrupt him."

Despite a couple of generations of English teacher's attempts to amke this 'rule' useful, there is no such rule in English. In fact, there are more exceptions to it than there are examples of it. A better rule, though not universal would be "I before E except after C when IE is pronounced 'EE'". Weird is still and exception (so are caffeine and seize). From QI: And what we found was 923 words which have <cie>, 2,606 words which have <ei> after something other than <c>, and just 167 words which really do have <cei>. (Of which only six are really in everyday use.) -- I'm Luke Skywalker, I'm here to rescue you.

Ahem. "I before E except after C, or when sounding like "ay" as in neighbor or weigh." Which of course still doesn't help with "weird" (or "height", or "heifer" or "ancient" or a dozen other words) but people always seem to forget the second half of the rhyme. English is just strange.
