KNode also uses scores, and a threshold below which posts are no longer
shown. However, the action of marking them as read is separate. One
can also mark posts as read without that they are actually hidden from
view.
One of the big downsides of KNode however is that it has loads of
undocumented scoring features. I wish someone would write the
documentation for those.

Well done. You've nailed the b/s going on here good and proper. There's been too much content-free meta-discussion going on, not least by the spammer-in-chief Mr Wood, who has posted more here than everyone else put together. "G2" is indeed the Google Groups web forum interface to usenet. Of 850 articles in my local spool for comp.misc at the moment, 25 were posted from there. > I also use on a daily basis depending on what machine I'm in > front of: > > Newswatcher MT (Mac OSX) > Unison (Mac OSX) > NNTP Reader (Android) > Phonews (Android) > Knode (Linux/KDE) > Seamonkey (several OSes) (guess that's Mozilla on the above list) As there seems to be some interest in such things, I'll start a group statistics thread and see what happens ... -- -- ^^^^^^^^^^ -- Whiskers -- ~~~~~~~~~~

I would have suspected that you were using a server that didn't filter GG spam, but I see that you are using individual.net which has an excellent spam filter, including that sourced from GG. I looked at 50 different posters' headers and saw only 2 GGers who have posted since the Slashdot refugee migration. -- Mike Easter

Only started reading comp.misc recently and havnt a good store of messages in my spool, about 82, so I filtering them to see those who have neither User-Agent: or X-Newsreader headers. I wrote the scripts for alt.folklore.computers, but a troll on that board ,Speed, started using differing alias's, so reduced the usefullness of the script. I use it occasionally, when it's the only thing available or when otherwise convenient to do so (like right now). Whenever I do use GG, I fix (manually) all the stupid formatting problems that it causes. Most of the time, however, I use a normal newsreader app or http://squte.com to post (via Eternal September of Individual.net). By the way, I'm apparently the only person that uses NewsgroupRT. If you have Windows 8, it might be worth a look; I use it on my tablet and I'm pretty happy with it. The developer is also pretty responsive to bug reports and feature requests. I've gotten every- thing I've asked for since I started using it. -- I drive a '74 AMC Hornet in my dreams. Also, I really like cheese.

I posted a couple of times from Google Groups, because ports 119 & 443 seem to be blocked on my office network (which is rather strange for a university). Anyway, I won't do it again, I'll wait until I'm at home and use Pan to post.

You are currently posting from e-s which also has a port 80 server reader80.eternal-september.org http://www.eternal-september.org/index.php?showpage=techinfo > Anyway, I won't do it again, I'll wait until I'm at home and use Pan to > post. Once upon a time GG used to be useful for its search function on the archives, but now that is pretty much shot. Also, once upon a time one could (also) post from GG without being 'disruptive', but that is now b0rken as well. -- Mike Easter

I don't know why they killed the search function. It seems to be incomplete not to mention the user interface! Is there any alternative? - Chris

I've been using both Pan and NewsMan Pro, and been very happy with both, for different reasons (Pan is simpler, NMP is more powerful)...but if you're looking for browser based, I'm unaware of something besides Google Groups.

I'm not sure if this is a serious question... I teach philosophy, mathematics and information systems. It is by no means a 9-to-5 job. I don't make a distinction between work time and free time. I have been correcting mid-term exams last weekend at home. I write my course material and do my research during the evening/night. Except when I am teaching a class or helping students or attending a meeting, nobody cares where I am or how I organize my time. Nowhere in my contract is mentioned how many hours I have to work, there even is no job description beyond "academic personnel". I have honestly no clue how many days of holiday I should have during a year. The past 4 years I have been teaching summer schools (I really loved doing that), this year I will have the first summer vacation since 2009. I do a lot of things for my university for which I am not paid (for example: system administration of our faculty's student grading system and training my colleagues on how to use it, or organizing evening debates for the alumni club), because it is a lot more than just a job to me: it is my life and my passion. I don't consider the university as my employer but as the community I belong to since I was a student. I am still involved in things I did here as a volunteer during my studies and I don't ask myself if that is part of my job or rather a hobby. When I decided that I wanted to spend a part of my time at the philosophy department or that I need to work for a month with a team of mathematicians in another country, I just informed my dean about that. No questions were asked, because he knows that I do my job. So if I want to post on usenet or hack away on a computer game in the office I can just do that.
