[image 2][1] What if commercial software developers for popular Windows
products sold Linux versions to a waiting market of open source users? Think
in terms of paying a subscription fee to use a Linux version of Adobe's
Photoshop image manipulation software, for starters. Is porting commercial
products like Photoshop as a licensed -- that is, paid -- product for Linux a
viable idea? That is precisely what one Linux server administrator wants
Adobe to find out. [image 3]

Not here. I get at least as good results from dcraw and ImageMagick as I
got from Photoshop.

Leased software for Linux... now there's a collision of worlds.

Yep, I don't think so. At least not for my use.
Employers LIKE to pay for software though.
Gives them that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Thing is, Adobe does make Acrobat Reader for *nix, and it's not very
good. Slow to start, cludgy interface, etc. There are very few times I
need to load it to read a PDF; 99% of my use cases I'm able to use
okular or something else. But at work (Windows) I've got the full-on
Adobe Acrobat and I don't like it much better. The interface is getting
worse, not better, it occasionally hangs, and simple things have gotten
harder to do. I can't even find half the stuff I used to do, like
reducing file size by down-sampling images.

If this is the kind of software Adobe would write for Linux users, I'd
say "hands off."

PDF-XChange is (or was, the last time I frequently used Windoze) far
better than Acrobat Reader. Something as good as that for *n*x might be
worth a look. IMX every new Adobe release installed not only more
bloated application software but more crap with it.

Photoshop for Irix was a good product, but we're talking about a
version getting near 2 decades old. For a while there it appeared that
Irix was to be the next big DTP platform, and Adobe among others
released some software for Irix and Solaris as well.

As the Unix workstation market cratered thanks to Linux and especially
OS X, these offerings were withdrawn though I believe that Adobe will
still sell you a Solaris Photoshop license for one of the older
versions if you call and pester them repeatedly.

That's about all it gives them.

Kickbacks?

For a while I worked for a manager who was at first sceptical about free
software, but when I showed him what could be done with Linux, Bash,
Perl and Emacs he let me use whatever I wanted.

While I was there the corporate IT department successfully argued for a
switch from Microsoft Office not to Open Office (which I had advocated
as much as I could) but to StarOffice. They couldn't get out of the
mindset of having to pay commercial developers for stuff, and couldn't
get the idea of perhaps paying the (then) Open Office developers to do
their thing. As Dan suggested, paying Sun probably made them feel warm
and fuzzy.

By the time I left, the corporate IT department's micro-management of
every aspect of data handling and storage was still advancing, I don't
like to think how much of their budget goes into closed source crapware now.

Not IME. There seems to be an imperative from senior management that we must
have "support", so they buy expensive (and frequently poorly performing)
software from companies such as I*M, M*******t and O****e complete with
even more expensive "support" contracts, then allow the software to get
so out of date that the "support" we're paying for is no longer available.
