Hello all Slashdot refugees. Let me be the first to inagurate a new
era of Dice-free Slashdotters reveling in the freedom of Usenet, the
grand-daddy of Internet discussion forums.

Plus this thing supports Unicode! すごい!

*waves flag*

Also, Usenet clients can actually be set to filter out the ever-present
GNAA/troll meme of the day junk, and the only way to technically get "first
post" is to actually start a new conversation.

Hmm. Speaking of conversation, I think I'll copy/post some of the recent
articles from the site, so people have something more to start with than
really old spam.

Awesome, that's why I'm here. Saw the note posted in the stupid "Slashdot tries something new, audience responds" article by user "xfzzfmage."

The more I experience Web 3.0, the more I miss Usenet. Fortunately, Usenet is still around, and also proudly serving up the newsgroups I manage: dictator.* hierarchy.

Let's resurrect this newsgroup and make it worth reading. I'm getting sick of browser exploits, javascript, flash, cookies, and the like. I want to go back to the world where we bitched about top-posting, hard wrapped 80 column text, and getting your email address harvested. In some ways, it was better.

Actually, what groups are still worth reading? I see that rec.cooking
is still lively. After that, I'm not sure.

sci.electronics.repair possibly the most awesomely useful/helpful group
ever. If you're into that sort of thing.

cakewalk.audio is still a refuge for a small cadre of audiophiles,
comp.mail.mutt and comp.text.tex are still useful (the latter, in
particular), and there are small, loyal groups still hanging out in
alt.callahans and alt.fratellibros (both non-technical). Same goes for
comp.sys.mac.vintage (where vintage now means early 2000 G3 imacs) and
comp.os.vms.

I forgot about comp.mail.mutt (still my go-to mail program, even with
Gmail, especially if I have a lot of pruning to do). Wasn't there a
Vim group at one time?

I spent the afternoon poking around to see what's still active:

* comp.misc - Growing
* rec.food.cooking - Still around
* rec.games.pinball - Still very active
* comp.os.linux.misc - Still active
* comp.os.linux.advocacy - Wow, what a cesspool
* comp.lang.c++ - Very active
* comp.lang.python - Very active
* comp.text.tex - Just because
* comp.mobile.android - New site, looks active
* news.software.readers - Still trying to figure out what is still used
* chico.general - Dead, but the place I hung out 20+ years ago

And all the rec.radio.amateur.* groups of course. A wonderful bunch.

rec.radio.amateur.* is great if you're a ham, comp.sys.mac.* is still
usable for Mac-heads (like me) especially c.s.m.system, and
alt.folklore.computers is very active with some really amazing posts
and posters.

I also like looking in at soc.history.*, soc.genealogy.*, and alt.survival.

comp.editors. Another pretty decent group with serious posts about many editors, not just Vim.

And for less serious pursuits:

- comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action (and others in that hierarchy, although
*.action is the most active) of the bunch

- rec.games.frp.dnd if you want to talk to some grognards debating the
point value of various builds across multiple editions of the classic
RPG ;-)

No, those too are mostly dead.

Just because a newsgroup exists doesn't mean there is much traffic.
Indeed, the Board has been slowly consolidating the newsgroups, checking
for those with no traffic in a long time and basically saying "is there
any reason this newsgroup shouldn't be deleted?" and then deleting. It
takes time to go through them all.

The rec.radio.* hierarchy is relatively dormant, at least the ones I read.
I havent' checked .antennas of the digital ones in some time.
rec.radio.shortwave is still doing sort of okay, but it's not what it used
to be, and still way too much of the traffic is off topic junk.
rec.radio.broadcasting is just posts from a bot, instead of providing a
lure, it's driven out the few posts from real people that were there.

This is the problem At one point, a group decided they needed a moderated
amateur radio newsgroup. It was created, yet once that moderated
newsgroup came into existence, after the initial surge, it's mostly dead.
The group behind the moderated newsgroup decided to "take over" the
hieraarchy, so they are posting bulletins to the moderated newsgroup,
rec.radio.info (where that sort of thing belonged) to .policy and .misc.
None of that is discussion, it's just content taken from webpages or
emailings from various groups. There's no reason for those posts to go to
four newsgroups, but it happens. So .misc and .policy look active, but
aren't.  Rec.radio.amateur.boatanchors has a few posts a month, depending
on if someone actually posts. rec.radio.amateur.equipment still gets too
many forsale ads, when it as for the discussion of equipment, not for
buying and selling. rec.radio.amateur.homebrew is pretty dead, though
right at the moment helped along by someone cross-posting to
uk.radio.amateur so we replies that have nothing to do with building.

DOn't look at a newsgroup and declare it alive or dead, if it matters to
you be a participant.

   Michael

Yes, but every so often we get the same guy cross-posting from
uk.radio.amateur to rec.radio.amateur.homebrew and since that happened
this month, there's more traffic in the latter newsgroup right now as the
arguments boil over. Topically, the initial post fits
rec.radio.amateur.homebrew but then it slides into an argument that is
otherwise offstage, since I don't read the UK newsgroup.

I don't recall one. Just comp.editors where even emacs (spit) users can
post.

So, not any different than any time in the last 15 years...

comp.sys.mac.vintage is hardly lively. It was only created last year, and
after an initial rush, traffic mostly died off. I stopped checking, but
did check just the other day, and some of the traffic is back, though I'm
not sure it's all that important.
