If you want to save usenet, go out and find the newsgroups where things that matter to you are supposed to be discussed. And then post away. That defines an active newsgroup, if there aren't people posting in that very small list then they couldn't be called active. You can actually change things by trying to put on-topic traffic into unused newsgroups, rather than ignoring newsgroups simply because "there's no traffic". You guys can't even tell what's an active newsgroup or not, "active" should mean lots of messages, and osme of those are pretty empty. Michael Black wrote: > Less than a month into this, and you think you have some place in "saving > usenet"? No, not really... but thanks for the inspiration underlying the new tagline in my sig. :) (And really, what's with the thinly-veiled hostility?) I'm not trying to save Usenet, and I don't believe that is a major goal of anyone that has started to post here over the past couple of weeks. We simply wanted a place to discuss things in the style we were used to on Slashdot. However, what many of us discovered (or rediscovered) along the way is that Usenet has real advantages over a centralized discussion medium owned and operated by a single entity that can change the rules on a whim or for purposes that don't serve the needs/wants of the community it fostered. > If you want to save usenet, go out and find the newsgroups where things > that matter to you are supposed to be discussed. You can actually change > things by trying to put on-topic traffic into unused newsgroups, rather > than ignoring newsgroups simply because "there's no traffic". I think that one of the things that matters to many of us - the Slashdot expats, anyway - is having a community that is active and interested in discussing things with each other. This Usenet group, comp.misc, is merely a means to that end. That doesn't mean we wish to limit who posts here, or even what types of topics are discussed. Besides, what's considered on- topic for comp.misc is pretty broad given the recognized purpose for this group from the latest "List of Big Eight Newsgroups" post (Feb 15, 2014) in news.announce.newgroups: "General topics about computers not covered elsewhere". So, we're basically doing what you suggest. One of us (can't remember who, but I want to thank that person) went and found a newsgroup where things that matter to us are supposed to be discussed, invited others to join in, and we all started posting away. We actually changed things by putting on- topic traffic into what was essentially an unused newsgroup. There may occasionally be messages posted that might theoretically be a better fit for other newsgroups, but since this group is defined rather broadly, one could interpret it to be dedicated to general interest discussions that don't get to the level of detail that would be expected for, or appreciated by, the audience in a more specific group. We have discussed concerns regarding the appropriateness of this particular group for the conversations we wished to have, and tried to recommend other groups that might be more appropriate for certain types of postings, based on recommendations from others reading this group. That was the original purpose of the "comp.misc list of active newsgroups" that I started to compile, which was in no way intended to recommend that people ignore other newsgroups. > You guys can't even tell what's an active newsgroup or not, "active" > should mean lots of messages, and osme of those are pretty empty. Well, it was intended to be a community list based on recommendations from any person that cared to reply. It was not intended to be a canonical list of newsgroups that meet a specific definition of the word "active". Besides, if anyone thinks a group on the list should be deleted, all they have to do is say so and it'll probably get removed... maybe by me, or maybe by someone else. While I may have started the list, I've never claimed sole ownership. Regards, Bill -- Join an active tech-news-and-discussion community in comp.misc...
