I have also never before heard about it. It was some time after Google Reader 
got shut down. I was looking for an RSS reader and didn't really want to 
install the bloated monstrosity that is Thunderbird. It was on a list of 
good RSS readers and I tried it out and liked it. I'm quite happy with the 
functionality it provides and since it's free , I can live with a few minor 
issues like no documentation or custom shortcut configuration, or that it 
offers a preview link function, but renders it in IE and it doesn't work 
properly.

As for newsgroups, it handles them pretty much like RSS, only threaded. I 
can set up custom rules, filter by topic or body and for basic usage I could 
not ask for anything more convenient. However, it doesn't have any sort of 
advanced options like the ability to see the original message body, or custom 
headers.

old usenet clichés. Or, if you can't stop yourself (all of you, I'm
not trying to address anyone in particular), could you please change
the topic in the subject line? I don't like starting to plonk any of
you, because there might be interesting posts as well, and I don't
like to plonk the WhatsApp-topic since it is interesting.

Could we all agree to add "Netiquette" to posts related to this topic?
