From the "graphics card? don't need no graphics card dept":

The folks over on the Raspberry Pi blog point us to an interesting and
useful project run by Adrian Cable: a virtual machine/PC emulator of the
Intel 8086 CPU accurate enough to run AutoCAD, Lotus 1-2-3, and classic
PC games. The kicker? It's 4043 bytes of highly condensed C code,
nothing more.

Industrialists with apps that rely on old PCs, or even just fogeys
interested in running WordPerfect 5.1 on their Raspberry Pis - you're all
in luck.

This reminds me of the PC Emulator for the Acorn Archimedes, I used it to run WP5.1 on ARM ... in 1987.

Correction: that must have been WP4.2.

That's pretty dense code in 8086tiny.c
("http://ioccc.org/2013/cable3/cable3.c"). The more readable version
of it at
("https://github.com/adriancable/8086tiny/blob/master/8086tiny.c") is
still stupefyingly dense.

While I'm sure this can be useful in very limited space environments, I
am a hard core Dosbox user. I have been meaning to get a Pi for a
while now just for Mathematica, but I have to try this little program
out as well once I get it.

Just to revive this older thread from last week... has anybody here played around with this yet? I don't have Pi yet, but I do have a list of reasons to get one, and this just got added to it. I see a Pi in my future, sooner rather than later.

(Also, I love how the code is 4043 bytes... half of 8086.)

Can't say I've checked this out yet, but I have been strongly meaning
to grab a copy of RiscOS (especially now that I noticed my TV DOES
actually have a second HDMI input port). Some of the unix ported code
on there is pretty impressive...there's very little it isn't capable of
doing as a fairly primary system, which makes it pretty attractive on
the Raspberry Pi. Linux is great and all, but it's these older systems
that really allow you to use the minimal hardware without noticing
the diminished speed.
