Don't encourage people to use google for access to Usenet, they have done
enough damage.

The famous thread where Linus Torvald announces Linux has been vandalized
by endless people who think it's "cool" to be part of a 20 year old
thread. They are helped along because the last time google changed their
interface they left in the bug that allows replies to messages older than
30 days. That may work in their groups, where everything is on one
webpage, but it is annoying and destructive to Usenet. I'm not even sure
the posters who reply to old messages know what they are doing.

Dejanws was useful as an archive of Usenet, and when google took it over,
initially that was valuable. But they are a constant drag on what's left,
and much of the time it seems like one can't even do proper searches of
the archive.

Probably not. Since one of the recent downgrades Google Groups
now shows the original posting date over on the far right where
it is not noticed by the tardy responder.

Even worse than the thread necros is the mangled formatting you see when two
or more Google Groups participants reply. Each reply throws empty lines
into the quote, so you see something like this:

Yesterday, Alice wrote:

It gets even worse as the thread gets deeper. For some examples, take a
look at recent posts to comp.sys.apple2. It might not even always wrap
lines at less than 80 columns, which brings its own nastiness.

About all Google Groups is really good at handling is searching for old
posts. Its own set of groups that exist outside of Usenet aren't too bad.
For interacting with Usenet, though, it is an abomination.
