Oops! Well, I'll consider that as part of my n00b initiation to usenet and refrain from doing it again. Thanks to several posters who came up with good advise on using port 80 or ssh. Cheers, Koen.

Not a big deal, of course, but refraining from feeding trolls makes it much easier for people who have killfiled them to avoid ever seeing a trace of them. It keeps the S/N ratio higher. Thanks.

Oops! Not at all. He gave what he considers to be a reasoned response to my question. Sounds a bit like the life of Riley to me, but hey, that's academia for you. -- "If you're not able to ask questions and deal with the answers without feeling that someone has called your intelligence or competence into question, don't ask questions on Usenet where the answers won't be carefully tailored to avoid tripping your hair-trigger insecurities." - D M Procida, UCSM

Eternal-september accepts NNTP connections on port 80, and on port 563 for NNTPS. Individual.net can handle NNTPS over port 563, and NNTP over ports 80 and 8119. Some other NSPs are also as flexible - or more so. Of course, ISPs and employers can block NNTP or NNTPS over any or all ports, if they really want to. A university should have it's own news-server, of course, possibly requiring access via a Unix shell account and using whichever usenet client is installed - could be tin or trn or Pine/Alpine/Re-alpine, or slrn if you're lucky. Your friendly local sysadmin may be able to help. -- -- ^^^^^^^^^^ -- Whiskers -- ~~~~~~~~~~

If you had an image related to the topic at hand, you posted a link. * And - even in its decline - remained fairly technical and sophisticated, a far cry from the flame-fests and fan-wankage of its competitors.

That may turn out to be the secret sauce that makes Slashdot (or SoylentNews) better than comp.misc...time will tell. Most of the other points you listed apply to Usenet as well as Slashdot: anonymous posting, threading, killfiles, and text-only content.

Then, there wasn't. The project continues <http://grouplens.org/about/what-is-grouplens/> but without any connection to usenet. Presumably there was insufficient demand from usenetters - or insufficient support from usenet client software. (The current source code for slrn still includes GroupLens support, but it is normally built without it) <http://slrn.sourceforge.net/docs/README.GroupLens>. So it's technically possible, and potentially there could be more than one such service in place and users could choose which, if any, to take part in. Just as long as those who don't want to don't have their usenet experience influenced by it. -- -- ^^^^^^^^^^ -- Whiskers -- ~~~~~~~~~~

Just put us all into your kill file and that'll keep the discussion tidy. Marko

In a way, it has. When major ISPs stopped carrying Usenet, the only ones left (other than the spam bots) were the ones who really cared about and saw value in Usenet as a platform. So now that you have to work to get here, you are rubbing shoulders only with the folks that cared to expend that amount of work. Plus, if you shell out the $10/year to a well-run NSP that runs cleanfeed and bleachbot/etc. it's relatively spam free. Other advantages: 1. no sidebar advertising 2. don't need to worry about your page timing out while you're composing a post 3. no stupid captchas 4. set your own, custom killfiles by word, poster, or even posting origin (hat tip to Blinky the Shark, who taught us how to axe posts from Google Groups) 5. Set up leafnode and you can keep a local archive

I've paid money off and on to Easynews, and I've kept my backup account at Eternal September just because, but I didn't know there were active ways to clean all the spam up besides personal kill files. That's cool!

That's cool! See: http://home.httrack.net/~nocem/ The way it works is a volunteer publishes a feed of articles he or his software think qualify as spam. And NSPs decide if they agree with that person's categorization and methodology, and "subscribe" to his feed. Then the news server automatically cancels anything that feed suggests is spam. What it doesn't do though is cancel replies to spam. And if your newsreader has already downloaded the spam then it's yours to keep, unfortunately, so it doesn't make disappear any articles you download before the software cancels them. Speaking of spam, my apologies again for the 'glacier' posts elsewhere here today. I have a script I can pipe RSS articles into for posting; it's an easy way to subscribe to interesting RSS feeds and then select some articles to post into a newsgroup. But I goofed up one variable and so it kept posting an older article. I'm embarrassed about it and decided to give it a rest for the remainder of today while I continue testing it. Mod them down! ha ha.
