From the "Strange Days are here" department: Title: Stolen from tech writer, Google Glass dutifully records the suspect Author: Barry Levine Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2014 20:12:31 -0500 Link: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Venturebeat/~3/LE_VRVvKfRo/ Podcast Download URL: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Venturebeat/~5/X2jMjV3WpHE/molotovs.png [image 1] Caption: Molotov's bar Source: Google+ A woman wearing a Google Glass walks into a bar. Then the punchline for this setup evaporated when someone stole her Glass — which recorded her alleged assailants. Tech writer Sarah Slocom was in the punk rock bar Molotov’s[2] in San Francisco’s famed Haight-Ashbury district on Friday night. As she was demonstrating Glass to some bar compatriots, she was confronted by two women, after which a man took the $1,500 accessory from her face. As she reported on Facebook[3]: “OMG so you’ll never believe this but… I got verbally and physically asaulted [sic] and robbed last night in the city, had things thrown at me because of some wanker Google Glass haters, then some *bleeeeeeeeeep* tore them off my face and ran out with them then and when I ran out after him his *bleeeeeeep* friends stole my purse, cellphone walet [sic] and everything..” According to witnesses, she got her Glass back, but not her purse, wallet, or phone. On Facebook, Slocum said she had “started recording them to protect myself,” taking footage of the alleged thief. She has filed a report with the police, and fortunately has not reported any injuries. San Francisco’s KPIX5 TV reported[4] that, at first, several people watching her demonstration were friendly, but others became agitated by the possibility of being recorded. The station said a man insulted her, another man accompanying her issued some fisticuffs at the insulter, the small crowd started jeering, and Slocum was recording. One bar patron, Brian Lester, told the station that some people were “just rather insulted that someone thinks it’s OK to record them the entire time they’re in public.” Another bystander, Brian, described Molotov’s as “not really Google Glass country.” Some San Francisco-watchers have pegged this incident as indicative of the growing tensions between tech workers and the working class in the city. Regardless, Google may want to add several dos and don’ts to its growing list[5] of recommended and to-be-avoided Glass behaviors: * Until the price drops from its current $1,500 price tag, do not demo Glass in a bar called Molotov’s. Similarly, skip cars while you’re driving them[6] and movie theaters[7]. * If you are a would-be thief and/or assailant, do notice that you might want to select something/someone that is not recording you. (Reference: Strange Days[8].) * Do watch the expected Law and Order episode where a Glass-wearing participant tests our understanding of how crime and punishment is supposed to work. And here the story would probably end for me. Very likely I'd ask the landlord to ban Google Glass immediately or hand me my bill so I can look for another bar. I don't like people running around with concealed cameras. I also don't like people in bars recording openly with their smartphones, but at least in that case I see if they are recording or not, and usually that's only short sequences. Talking to glassholes puts me under tension. When talking to normal people, a wrong word can usually be cancled out by an apology. A rouge joke that may fit for that particular mood wil be seen only in that particular mood. On the record, everything will definitely be taken out of context, because the mood is never part of the recording. Therefore, the only thing I'd have to say to a Google Glass user is "Please remove your glass." and "Good bye." I'm not going to say "she asked for it", because there is no justification to rob anything of anyone. But my sympathies are reserved for less ignorant people. -- Trolling is a art! Weep :-) There is no sense to give up already because there might be a time the battle is seriously lost. Maybe there are other inventions by then, like a zapper (you know the manual how to build an RFID zapper? With some wire to build a simple inductor, a capacitor and battery?), for Google Contacts to fry them remotely. Seriously, I think we are still a couple of decades away from undetectable camera contact lenses. The main problem would probably be the power supply. Battery development never kept up with miniaturization in other electronic areas. -- Trolling is a art! My public-key is available on http://tinyurl.com/ps9r99y

You just need to tap the optic nerve. Granted, it might be technically simpler just install Google Eye in the socket. > The main problem would probably be the power supply. It's creepy. Two things. One: she's now classifying herself as a victim of "hate crime," for what that's worth - a stretch of the original definition, perhaps, but maybe valid. Two - can't remember what you would look for on Youtube to find it, but there's some awesome videos made by a Canadian (I think?) student who just walks into classrooms with a video recorder running and starts filming people. Everyone gets upset with him and he usually gets politely but forcefully ejected from the classrooms by angry professors. That's the point after all - people don't like having their privacy violated by people who feel they are entitled to record other people without their permission. Unlike that awesome movie 'Strange Days' (I just re-watched it this weekend after someone on Comp.misc reminding me of the name), I'd bet there's a lot of Google Glass video out there that ends with an image of a swinging fist. Soon it will be a baseball bat ...

Still is. He sent for me to do something for him, he proposed the job, I declined, then he showed me his newest gadget, a small voice recorder. I sweated inwardly, thanking Godot that I had refused his offer, which was semi-legal. I am not, or was then, sure of the legal basis of recording a conversation with any of those recorded not being aware of it. Some time later, he was being given a lift home, and in gratitude, told the driver about his recorder, so the driver asked to see it, and tossed it into the canal at the next bridge. Couple of weeks ago, there was a picture of him in a tabloid, thieves had tried to break into hs house, and he had chased them away with his gun. (To my knowledge, the `thieves' were former associates of his trying to get paid). Yes, there was his picture, wearing Google Glasses. So what are they handy for?.. Well, you can spot nutcases, when they wear them -- maus . . ...

Some of you may know about Dr. Steve Mann (U Toronto), who has been
developing and using technology like Google Glass since the 1980s. He's
actually been declared physically dependent upon it by a physician, as a
result of physiological adaptation to long-term continous use. Anyway,
he's had a couple of incidents because of his wearable devices. The two
cases that I can remember are:
The 2002 St John's Airport Incident
"http://www.nytimes.com/2002/03/14/technology/at-airport-gate-a-cyborg-unplugged.html"
The 2012 Paris McDonald's incident
"http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2012/07/18/toronto_cyborg_steve_mann_says_he_was_assaulted_in_paris_mcdonalds.html"
I don't see this situation getting better any time soon. At the same
time, I believe that this kind of technology is only going to become
more common ... and maybe it seems like science fiction right now, but
I can definitely imagine a world in which nearly everyone is recording
everything they see, almost all the time (note to self: turn off record
and broadcast functions in washroom). Eventually, the only way out for
people that don't want to be recorded will be to wear scramble suits
("A Scanner Darkly" by Philip K. Dick) whenever they're out in public.
Regards,
Bill
