It appears Redmond started refusing 4.2 clients over the weekend, forcing
download of a new 4.3 linux client (no sign of it in any repositories),
which seems to be quite the buggy mess:

I'm not in front of my Skype box so can't confirm. But if that's
true it would seem to be yet another public service announcement
reminding that public and open protocol software is the way to
 go.

Can confirm. That's it for me, I had installed skype for calls with
clients but fuck that shit I felt dirty every time I started that trojan
horse anyways.

Alternatives?

4.2.0.11 is still working for me.

I got 4.3 almost working by enabling pulse audio. But the microphone
pickup was very quiet so not really usable (even though its level was up
to 100%). I have reverted to 4.2.

With 4.2 and pulse audio I installed pavucontrol, then from in skype I
unchecked the box which allows skype to adjust the volume, then clicked
the volume control button which opened pavucontrol. Then I increased the
microphone volume to 153% (??). This improved the sound although it was
still rather quiet. I expect this procedure would work with 4.3 but I
can't be bothered to try it as the sound on 4.2 is far better.
