Keep XP as long as the computer functions. Simply format and reload every
few years when the viruses/crapware get too bad.

Flat out forbid her from using Internet Explorer and Outlook (remove
icons, if necessary) Install either Firefox or Chrome with Ad Block Plus.
Set up Thunderbird if she needs email.

There are a number of standalone NAS devices these days. Example:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822108163

Keeping photos and documents she wants to keep on a file server is a good
practice. The NAS will give basic raid protection to guard against a
single hard drive failing. Plus, the shared folder makes backups a lot
easier.

It's possible for a techie to sync the device on Linux. But, Apple likes
to break this process *A LOT*. Trying to explain this month's method to a
non-techie is an exercise in frustration. I've gone down that road, and
it's not pretty.

For non-techies, requiring iTunes means using either a PC or a Mac.

iPads and iPhones can now update themselves without the need of a
computer. If you want to "sync" your own music and data from the device
(so that it can be restored onto a new device if you loose the first
device) you still need a PC/Mac to sync to iTunes.

Thanks everyone for all the replies. I didn't know about libimobiledevice before.
From the answers and some other reading I think it takes more work to sync on Linux
than its worth, so I will probably recommend a Mac.

Practice the reply "Sorry, I don't know much about Apple stuff" that
cuts down on the support hassle no end.

On the other hand - this is for your wife, right? You might want to
try a response that ensures your sex life doesn't reach a premature
end. Learning some Mac might be a good investment in that case!
