The article makes some good points, but seems to measure success solely by revenue
and market capitalization, going so far as to call open source a failure. In doing
so, the author totally ignores other potential measures of success, and leaves out
a whole class of corporations that have been successful for long periods of time:
non-profits like Apache, Mozilla, Linux Foundation, PostgreSQL, SPI (Debian), OSI,
FSF (GNU), and others. Maybe these organizations don't create "shareholder value"
for themselves, but they sure as hell do it for others that use their products.
Omitting such an important class of organizations from the article is a huge oversight
that unfairly downplays the contributions of Free Software and Open Source to business
and the world economy.
