My feelings are that when someone contributes to a community site they are
making an effort to help the community, being altruistic and giving their time
to help others. But often, when it's a commercial site the owner can just
hijack this and lock the original posters out of the site with a paywall or
excessive advertising.

So personally I don't contribute to commercial 'community' sites unless
either:

1 all content is duplicated on Usenet or a similar archived, open, network

or

2 the owner gives an absolute guarantee that they won't change the site
without a vote by the users

I experienced 2) with a forum where most of the content was provided by
the users until the owner died in a tragic accident. Unfortunately the
site ownership went to his next of kin who lived half way around the world
(so couldn't contribute to forum topics concerning local issues even if he
had wished to), and sold it to a commercial entity. It went all too
predictably downhill from there.

Sometimes unavoidable shit happens :-(

Bruce Perens and Soylentnews.org are going different ways.

Perens is (re)starting his own site Technocrat.net on Tuesday, February 17th (which is weird, because the 17th is Monday).

We have brand-new software (not a warmed-over old version of Slashdot's code) working, but with only the basic features. No moderation yet.

We are expecting to have a low-user-id land-rush on Tuesday February 17. We will be soliciting for volunteer editors then. "

Nice, we could become digital sharecroppers working on old Perens'
plantation. How awesome would that be? I wonder if Massa' Perens will
give volunteer editors food and a shack, or if they will work fo free?

So... What's the point?!? Divide and ... fail? Granted, I will have a
look there, but I will not add another dozen of websites + usenet to
replace slashdot. Sad to see the former slashdot community doesn't
work together on this and will fragment instead.

I never understood what's so important in having a short UID. Offering
a dysfunctional website and advertising the availability of low UIDs
sounds like in the future low UIDs will be an indicator of
overenthusiastic wannebes.

Excellent. I'm all in favor of more slashdot-like sites, especially if
they are based on /.'s moderation/discussion system, if not its code.
Allowing moderation of comments by the general readership (and not a
select few) and anonymous commenting were two of the great strengths
of the original and I am glad to see it being used by other sites. We
had too many eggs in one basket with Dice.

Hopefully this diaspora will also result in cleaner, more
easily-transferable code. From what I understand, even the people who
had left Slashdot years ago still looked fondly upon the comment
system, if not the other commentors/topics/editors.

The sooner we get away from awful phpBB-type comment systems, the
better.

Hear, hear – I'll visit both of them, and probably even visit Slashdot
once in a while. May the best site win! I spend (or spent) a bit of
time on http://www.osnews.com for a couple of years too, and the
Register is still out there. It seems like these oldies are being
overtaken by sites like Ars Technica and the like, but I've never
thought the content in the newer sites was that much better. Even
Kuro5hin could have a chance if someone wanted to gather up a community
and get discussion going there. It's a freaking wasteland now, though.
Dustballs blowing across the highway, etc.

I wonder what Bruce Perens is going to cook up? Seems he'd have had
better luck attracting a community if he'd worked together with the
Slash Refugees …

OSNews is a new one for me; I've added it to my collection of "tech
sites". I intend to continue to visit Slashdot regularly, until Dice's
antics become unbearable (which will probably be the day they force
the beta redesign on everyone and remove the classic option). But
until then, the site still provides me what I like.

Ars is fine site, but it is designed around the concept that the
primary draw is its own articles, with the commentary being of
secondary importance. Fortunately, it has great articles so it is
worth reading, but they don't make me stick around. I need a piece of
info, I might check Ars for advice - but as soon as I get it, I'm off
to some other location. With Slashdot, I hang around to read all the
comments in one story, and then stick around to see what people say in
the next, and the next and...

In other words, Slashdot serves less to as a source of information
than as entertainment, but in doing so, gets more loyalty and traffic.

According to a previous post in this thread, he is reviving his site
technocrat.net today, in response to the slashdot fiasco
