I've just rediscovered two methods that get you Slashdot headlines but
trim out most of the crap.

http://alterslash.org works great on a cellphone/tablet - a single,
screenscraped page of headlines and selected top comments based on
their score. Very useful.

http://avantslash.org is similar but has more graphics. Gets you a
quick look at whether there is anything worth reading today.

For Soylent news, which I'm now deciding is close to unreadable,
http://soylitenews.org is an implementation of avantslash for soy. I
used to think I was happy with the old slashcode but now I'm not, and
following low-scored threads is annoying. BTW, Soy's RSS feed is
totally borked. I don't know what their problem is but it's a mess of
HTML garbage in newsbeuter and on my Android RSS reader.

Pipedot is currently the site best able to be read on a small screen
without reverting to alternative interfaces, and not only is it easy to
set the threshold for comments but the new twin color method makes new
comments (since the last time you read them) stand out, which is
extremely useful.

I'm currently testing out some CSS media query changes to hopefully
improve the mobile rendering for Pipedot. Things like the left navigation
bar and the right aside areas are now reordered vertically on small
screens. The text, finally, is no longer microscopic at the default zoom
level. The changes aren't yet finished and, as always, the site is still
a work in progress... but any suggestions would be helpful.
