Interesting article, also linked at hackernews.

Kernel 101 – Let’s write a Kernel
by Arjun Sreedharan

Hello World,

Let us write a simple kernel which could be loaded with the GRUB
bootloader on an x86 system. This kernel will display a message on the
screen and then hang.

How does an x86 machine boot

Before we think about writing a kernel, let’s see how the machine boots
up and transfers control to the kernel: ...

How cool - here's the logical followup, also from hackernews:

CREATING A BARE BONES BOOTLOADER
PUBLISHED APRIL 16, 2014 BY JOE SAVAGE
Upon hearing the word 'bootloader', many people cower in fear. It seems like a scary low-level thing that's very easy to mess up. To dispel some of this fear, I'm going to walk through making a super simple bootloader/OS, assuming only a basic level of familiarity with assembly language and how computers work.

FYI the following newsgroup is focussed on os development (including
bootloaders).

  alt.os.development

There are some other potentially useful groups too.

  comp.lang.asm.x86
  alt.lang.asm
  alt.os.assembly

A lot of assumptions people make have been found to be wrong. The archives
of alt.os.development hold a wealth of detailed info.

James
