Hacker News linked to this article this morning:

https://help.linkedin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/47196/ft/eng
and ... just for /. nostalgia: "from the i-never-liked-it-anyway
department"

It looks like they're dropping Intro as a messaging app for the iphone,
but with no explanation. No worries, we can provide a few explanations:

1. it was invasive
2. people hated it
3. maybe no one used it
4. someone probably threatened to sue their pants off
5. ???

LinkedIn just kills me. Practically everybody I have ever corresponded
with professionally or personally wants to add me as one of their
LinkedIn buddies. It wouldn't be that bad if they didn't also send a
large amount of reminder messages with each request. My solution has
been to flag any LinkedIn mail as spam for some time now.

A question - have any of you received job offers or other career
enhancements of any kind as a result of LinkedIn?

I have friends that have. What gets me about LinkedIn, however, is
that just browsing around the site gets tracked, and then sent to the
person you're browsing. I really don't want to know that an old
colleague I didn't care much for anyway, now knows that I've looked him
up to see how he's doing. So, I don't use the site much.

There is a certain expectation that you have a certain professional
presence on the site, but that doesn't mean you have to actively use
it.

Yes, two times, including my present job.

First time was a job as sysadmin/DBA, now teaching maths & philosophy at a university college.

There are good consulting contracts and (unfortunately) bad consulting
contracts. History of the bad contracts will surely follow you all your
life if ye do the linked in thing...

... so I don't.

Happy to be on facebook (but no work details left there), but NOT linkedin.

I'm the reverse: I'm on linked-in but not Facebook. I have gotten several job offers, as I have a somewhat unique background. Haven't taken any. I think it's useful, but still don't want their stupid 'Intro' software.

I was on LinkedIn but they started to try and take over ny Inbox, so I
sacked them. Facebook never held any appeal for me and I *really* lost
interest in them when there was one privacy issue after another.
