#286 — John McAfee declares war on Android

John McAfee announced his next product, "Cognizant",
reported by Silicon Angle. An Android app, it aims
to provide security for the mobile OS by taking a
census of what permissions are granted to specific
applications. Providing awareness of the extent of
unnecessary and overreaching permissions, by McAfee's
logic, will encourage users to delete or avoid
installing apps with the most egregious of security
issues.

Let's hope it's easier to uninstall this one than
the last major security product to bear his name.

My small town three office credit union has an app for people too lazy or baffled to use the website. All it does is wrap the website. Oh, that, and read your entire contact list (WTF?)

That is creepy. I was looking for an article about an app that reveals
to you what each app on your system has permission to do. Found this
instead, which is similar but not exactly what I remember reading the
last time.

iOS apps don't even tell you what permissions they need. It's crazy.
These days you can get people to do almost anything in the name of
'convenience' and 'user experience.'

That said, I'm not a big fan of McAfee's software. I would be very
skeptical of installing anything of his on my phone/tablet in fears it
would install itself permanently, nag me to death, and bog the system
down until it runs at a slow crawl.

Yea, given that he wasn't with the company since before
windows 95 existed, I generally cut the man some slack
when it comes to McAfee Antivirus. Most of the nastier
things it does that people hate weren't even possible
on windows 3.1 and earlier.
