Lots of interesting things going on "upstairs." Soylent [1] has just put in place a mechanism where you can become a member for $20/year. The money supports the site and you get a star next to your name. I gave them my $20 because 'Fuck you, Dice,' that's why. Unfortunately the money doesn't go to editors (it never does) so it will have no impact on the story choices or editing, but it will hopefully give them server space and bandwidth and room to move. Pipedot [2] tried an experiment in which a script siphons articles and comments from Soylent. N1Commander had offered Pipedot a feed. But the negative impact outweighed the benefits and it was shut off. Many Soylentils were upset about the "willfull plagiarism/copyright violation" and the Pipeheads felt the site drowned in Soylent blather. So experiment is over, and there's a healthy debate going on about the future of Pipedot. Given the fact the code is progressing and changing so rapidly, this feedback will probably impact the interface in meaningful ways. The interesting thing about the experiment is Bryan (the guy behind pipecode)'s vision for pipecode, which involves some sort of federated sharing of articles in a way that sounds inspired by Usenet. I'm on a tablet, so can't provide better links than the front page. Worth reading though. [1] http://soylentnews.org [2] http://pipedot.org
