I agree with you entirely.  Some might say the smartphone apps
 paradigm is a welcome break from the desktop and I agree the new
 device warrants a different interface than the desktop computer. 
 But in general, given the number of people working in the
 industry now, software seems to be making surprisingly little
 progress over the last 10 years.  Unless I'm simply
 jaded.
