My money is still on hijacking, at the moment. What's interesting to me isn't the whole terrorism angle but how many weaknesses it has exposed in systems that are supposed to be reliable - conflicting reports from military and observers, missing data, bad records, etc. "How can this happen in 2014" says the article I posted over at m.n.i.d. Go live in a place like Malaysia or Senegal and get to know how they do business and you find this is no surprise at all. I used to live in Indonesia in the early 90s, and once caught a ride on a copra freighter traveling between the islands. "These guys must be awesome mariners," I thought, so I was excited for a look around the cockpit when invited. To my astonishment, they were navigating with nothing better than a pack of cigarettes, a ballpoint pen, and a photocopy of a chart made by the Dutch prior to WWI. No radar, no lights (hardly), no sextant, no leadline, just a pack of smokes and a whole lot of Inshallah. You've got a whole bunch of officials supposed to be on the ball over there, that probably aren't on the ball at all.
