I've got a friend who still has his 1986-ish Commodore 64, and it boots up just
fine.  Obviously modern hardware is more complicated, but damn it doesn't last
as long.  You've got a long list of hardware woes on a laptop that by my
standards *shouldn't be* that old.  But these days, a five year old laptop is
decrepit.  My old PIII Compaq laptop limped along for nearly ten years, though
it was in bad shape towards the end.  Each new machine lasts for less time,
dammit.
