cykros writes: Utah law currently provides regulations on the use of License Plate Readers (LPR's), which are generally used by law enforcement to quickly scan license plates to check against a database of vehicles that are stolen or otherwise qualify for a "hot list". Private LPR firms Digital Recognition Network and Vigilant Solutioons are suing Utah's governor and attorney general on the grounds that they claim to have a First Amendment right to collect data on license plates, as they are displayed in public view on roads. Privacy advocates are dismayed by this suit, due to the implications of this data being processed into a useful and organized database. http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/02/private-firms-argue-first-amendment-right-to-collect-license-plate-data/
